I’m slowly making my way through the book Uncreative Writing, which so far talks a lot about the reappropriation of language, text, code, and the like in the digital age.  Somewhat along the same lines, I thought this quick video on the history & future of emoticons and their ability for new expressions of emotion was pretty interesting.  Have you heard of Emoji Dick (a full emoji translation of Moby Dick)?  How does all this new technology make you feel?  🙂  😐  😦

Hi party people in the house! This weekend was awesome because it was our little brother Teddy’s birthday. He is the best and I loved celebrating with him! Our cousin Reed flew out for the occasion and wanted to share his pictures from the weekend. Thanks for contributing Reedy!

In honor of all the art enthusiasts who have gathered at Art Basel Miami this weekend, I thought I’d select a few of my favorite Dan Flavin works with fluorescent tubes.  I was actually unfamiliar with Dan Flavin until reading this New Yorker article about art dealing on my way home from LA last week.  The article profiled art dealer David Zwirner who explained, “One of the reasons there’s so much talk about money [in the art world] is that it’s so much easier to talk about than the art.”

I miss New York much more than I ever anticipated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEDDY!

I have really enjoyed a lot of things this week and thought I would share some of the things that brought me wonder, joy and excitement.

First and foremost, these girls are hilarious. I watched some of their webisodes and could totally relate to almost all of them.

At the beginning of every month, I try to check my Susan Miller horoscope. If you are into horoscopes and have never read hers, you are in for a great treat.

I just got back from an “urban sweat lodge” called Shape House and feel so relaxed and ready for bed. If you live in the Los Angeles area, try it out. It is amazing.

One of my favorite Functional Medicine practitioners, Dr. Frank Lipman was featured in the New York Times this week. Check it out here.

It was through that article that I realized that he has a TedTalk. He is from South Africa and has such an amazing story. You will love him.

When I flee New York in November, it’s only on the way out that I realize how much I need a break. There’s something about lugging a suitcase down four flights of stairs, already late, that reminds me of how calm it is so many other places.

I pull my suitcase down the street, its wheels rolling unevenly over wet concrete.  After fitting said suitcase under the subway turnstile and carrying it down another set of stairs, I eventually find myself a seat on the train.  It’s then that I realize I’m about to have six! uninterrupted daytime hours to myself, once I make it to the flight.  Almost simultaneously, I realize coffee and croissant do not make for a proper day’s nutritional or caloric intake.

The summer is all outdoors. But once the chill begins, those outdoor hours wane.  I forget how much I need to be outside; I realize I barely noticed the slow effect of my inattention.  I realize I’ve once again lost the balance between healthy downtime and lethargy.

As I’m leaving aloneness I recall the transition that will soon put me back into my family, connecting just long enough for it to be hard to leave.  I’ll come back calmer and more peaceful, and I’ll be ready to take a deep inhale.

I had a fantastic week with my family in California and feel so grateful for them all. On the topic of family, I saw this TED Talk today and it left an impact on me. As someone who can’t wait to be a mother, I found this talk so insightful, powerful and inspiring.  Clinical psychologist Dr. Shepali Tsabary spoke so eloquently about the relationship between child and parent and how imperative it is.

I appreciate that my own parents did the best they could in the moment and rarely projected their expectations of themselves on us.

F:  What was your favorite part about your LA visit?

L:  Well, this little buddy above was a delightful find during our visit to LACMA!  I also loved the day we spent in Malibu; it’s so gorgeous there.  Overall, I loved being out of the cold and getting to spend some low-key, chill time with our family.

F:  What is your favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving?

L:  Pumpkin pie, hands down.

F: Can you share one of your favorite pictures from 2013?

L:  I recently took this picture on my way home from work.  I was shooting the pigeons before the monk came out to feed them and then caught this moment.

F:  Do you like the holiday season? If yes, why? If no, why?

L:  I like it enough.  It’s always nice when it’s happening but I don’t spend all year looking forward to it or anything along those lines.

F. What is your favorite season?

L:  Summer or Spring, if it’s a warm one!

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We had a weekend full of family time complete with a lovely Thanksgiving dinner, a wonderful day in Malibu, a set by Monster Rally and an endless shopping trip to make you never want to set foot in a mall again!  Here’s a little glance back.

Have a great day!

We’ve been doing a weekly One Word, Two Ways series since the start of Sister Disco.  We keep a compilation of the series as one of the site’s header pages but thought it might be fun to share it with you as a post today.  Click though any of the words below, if you’re so inclined, to check out the post related to that word!

In addition to all the guidance and wisdom Farrell and I have received from the “moms” in our lives, they have each been gracious enough to put some of their life lessons into writing (or we’ve done it without their knowledge – i.e. our grandmother) and share it with all of us here.  We hope you’ll take a glance back at these tips for living, these ladies know what’s up.

– Suzanne has been one of our mother’s best friends since graduate school and is basically our third parent. She moved into our home the day Lauren (the oldest of the four of us) was born and lived with us for thirteen years.  She was there for every birthday, knee scratch and first day of school. Just like any other parent, she helped mold me into the person I am today.  What can I say, she is the best.  When we were growing up, every time we said goodbye to Suz, she would tell us, “Trust in yourself. Do what’s right.”   I asked Suz about her biggest life lessons; this is what she had to say…(read more)
