Coast to Coast

L:  Do you have a go-to cure for boredom?

F: I went to an event last night and there was a question of the day. The question was: Which vice would you like to give up for 30 days? I wrote feeling bored. Lately I have gotten into the habit of bordem. I think it is all a state of mind – a perspective. Usually, I do something I have never done before to rid myself of the habit.

L:  Will you be doing any cooking for Thanksgiving with Albert’s family?

F: I am so excited to go back to Boulder. I always love to be there. I hope to help with some of the cooking, but I haven’t been assigned anything yet. More to come…

L:  If you could only have one, would you rather have a bathtub or fireplace in your house/apt?

F: Now THAT is a question! If I could only have one and environmental resources we not at stake, I would certainly choose a bathtub. I love a good bath.

L:  What has been the best part of your week so far?

F: On Thursday morning some of my friends and I went on a 7am hike in the mountains. It is always so nice to spend time with other women and really talk things out. I loved it.

L:  Have you heard any good new music lately?

F. Nothing too new lately, however I have been listening a lot to the “Easy Beat” album by Dr. Dog. It is just forever giving.

Listen here.

F:  How was your birthday?  What did you do?

L:  My birthday was so nice!  I woke up in Bridgehampton, NY to so many texts and Facebook wishes.  After a lazy morning, I went to the the Parrish Art Museum and then out for this all American lunch, which seemed like a great idea until I arrived in a super intense yoga class and spent the next 45mins to an hour really regretful for either having eaten all of that or showing up to yoga afterwards, not entirely sure which.  After yoga my friend Maggie cooked me such a delicious dinner of fresh scallops and sauteed microgreens straight from a local farm, with a chocolate chia seed pudding for dessert.  Can’t really ask for a more pleasant way to spend a day!

F:  Do you have any goals going into this next year of life?

L:  My sense is that this year is going to be about simplifying my life and applying myself to completely new projects and ventures.  I’m looking forward to slowing down, enhancing my quality of life, removing negativity/toxicity, staying open to connect with the people I encounter and nurturing the relationships I am fortunate enough to have.

F:  What was the last thing you ate?

L:  See above about that amazing scallop dinner!

F:  Have you been meditating?

L:  I was doing the Oprah/Deepak 21-day meditation but then fell behind for a few days.  I picked it back up this morning though, which was nice, but it bothers me that I am off-sequence and there’s nothing I can do about it. Just when I think I’m all chilled out…

F:  How do you feel about the holiday season?

L:  It’s too soon!  Seeing Christmas decorations and inventory in stores already literally grosses me out.  I like Thanksgiving and Christmas when they’re actually happening but the anticipation of them never feels very good to me.  The association with the weather getting colder doesn’t help either.  Wouldn’t life be different if our holiday season was in the summertime?!

L:  What is a skill or talent you’d like to develop?

F:  I would love to be an amazing singer.  I love to sing – mostly in the shower.  I have always wanted to take voice lessons.

L:  What has been the highlight of your week, thus far?

F:  Oh the highlight of my week?  My friend Alison put together a clothing swap on Tuesday night.  I have never been to one and thought it was a great idea.  The best part for me was seeing items that I thought were a good fit for my friends.  I left with a New Year’s Eve option!

L:  What item in your closet is getting the most play these days?

F:  I think my cheetah flats and tan sweater from Cotton Inc.  That place is a steal!  Have you ever been?  So many basic pieces that are made well and are affordable.  It is also 79 degrees as I type this.

L:  Are you afraid of growing old?

F:  Mostly, no.  It seems like a silly thing to feel upset about because it is going to happen whether you like it or not.  I don’t want to be really old, but I am ok with getting gradually older.

L:  What should I make for dinner?

F:  Have you ever made stew before? I think you would be very happy if you make a stew, chili or soup.  However, if you will be headed back to the city tomorrow and are just doing a one time meal, then I recommend Mediterranean Noodles.  It is so simple, filling and fresh.

F:  How is your getaway in the Hamptons?

L: Well, I only just arrived so it’s a little yet to be seen (even more so because I arrived after dark).  More to come once I’ve taken in a few daylight hours.

F:  What are the fall trends around the city?

L:  Ankle boots, patterned scarves, black leather motorcycle jackets and hats – among many others, I’m sure.

F:  How do you feel about being back in New York after spending some time at home?

L:  I got completely nostalgic for NYC listening to this interview, “Writers on Loving and Leaving New York,” when I was home.  The past couple of days back have been great!  I attended a portion of the 2014 Travel + Social Good Summit on Friday, spent the whole day with some of my closest peeps on Saturday, saw some live jazz that evening, and had a late afternoon cocktail with this beauty on a boat-turned-oyster bar on Monday.  All good things!

F:  Are you planning a trip out to California?!

L:  Yes!  Theoretically I am, anyway.  We need to figure out when I should come.  When should I come?

F:  Do you have any plans for your birthday?

L:  Nothing set as of now.  I’m not looking to make much of a thing of it this year so however the day goes will be fine with me!

L:  What are you thinking in terms of Halloween costumes this year?

F: You know how much us Feighan’s love Halloween! Well first thing’s first, we are having a Halloween Party. Albert is pretty excited as he wants to have a candy eating contest. He is having a hard time finding any takers. As far as costumes, I like to keep it a surprise.

L:  If you could make one change/enhancement to your apartment, what would it be?

F: Make everything white!!

L:  How’s the surf lately?

F: I haven’t gotten up on the board in a very long time. By the end of the day (when we surf) I feel tired and just like laying on my board in the water.

L:  What comedian are you most into these days?

F: I am so into Kristin Wig. She is my most favorite.

L:  If we were going to fly and meet somewhere this weekend, where would you want to go?

F: Hawaii or Iceland. Or I would be happy just to see you coming down your building’s stairs in NYC while I waited for you to let me in.

F:  Where are you now and what are you doing?

L:  I’m at home in Cleveland sitting at the kitchen table.  Mom and David and I were hanging out for a bit but they both just went to bed.

F:  What are you most excited about in the next month?

L:  I’m most excited to have my days free to structure them however works best for me.

F:  Tell me about your day of travel. What made it so special?

L:  Oh man, what a day!  I flew to Cleveland via Charlotte and struck up a fantastic conversation with my seatmate, quickly realizing we had much in common.  It was super energizing.  Then in Charlotte my flight was delayed so I sat at a bar to have a drink and charge my phone.  Immediately this super eccentric older man on his way to the York Train Show came and sat down next to me.  Had I been in another mood I would have likely tried to avoid a conversation, but I’d just had such a good experience on the earlier flight that I decided to embrace it.  In the course of one beer he told me all about his thirty year career as a biology professor specializing in parasitology, his experience contracting malaria, the worst sunburn he ever had which he got mowing lawns as a young boy, an academic trip to Costa Rica in the ’60s, his current insect collection which includes hundreds of different types of butterflies and moths, and much, much more.  After he left I had a long conversation with this somewhat gregarious guy who was originally from southern Illinois and now lives in Cincinnati.  He was on his way back from a work trip to Las Vegas, and had won at the roulette table the night before.  He bought me a beer and hugged me when he left.  Then I went to the ladies room and the bathroom attendant complimented me on my hat and asked me where I was headed.  We ended up having a really sweet conversation about her upcoming trip to see her mother and her plan to retire to Fort Meyers, Florida next year.  I walked out of the bathroom feeling like my little heart could just burst with all the loveliness of humanity.

After almost five hours in the airport, my flight was finally boarding.  But when I got to the gate, something had gone wrong with my boarding pass and I was bumped off my flight.  I went to the customer service desk and was told that I might not make it out of Charlotte that night.  I was really trying to keep cool after having had such a delightful day.  Then the customer service agent asked me if I was an artist.  I said yes (why not; I took a painting class this summer).  Then I asked him if he was an artist and he also said yes.  I asked him what kind and he said he is a writer, so I asked him what kind of writing he does, and he said inspirational.  I asked him if he puts his writing out anywhere and he tells me to look up mytruedestiny.com.  Turns out he writes all about maximizing your potential and has published a book, “How Do I Reach My True Destiny?: 9 Principles for Authentic Living and Maximizing Your Potential.”  I told him that I’d just left my job of nearly eight years and that the timing was perfect, I will definitely be reading the book.  The whole thing felt surreal!

Roughly twelve hours after leaving NYC, I finally made it to Cleveland, and a day that might have been miserable somehow actually felt pretty magical.

F:  What are your staple items for fall?

L:  I have a black leather portfolio that holds a legal pad with all my life plans, ideas and to-do lists; it goes everywhere with me  these days.  I’m also back to wearing that pair of stretchy, black, high-waisted, acid-washed jeans I bought last year.  They are outrageously comfortable.  Other than that, I have been wearing slight variations on all black outfits almost every day, mostly because I’m not actually sure how I want to look right now.  Give me a week in Cleveland and I’m sure I’ll be adding more color to the mix.

F:  What do you do when you feel sad?

L:  Typically I cry, wallow and isolate.  Being around other people almost always makes me feel better but I find it hard to reach out when I’m upset, even when I know it would be beneficial.  When worse comes to worst, there’s always this 3-step course of action to fall back on.  It’s pretty foolproof.

L:  What is the name of that Netflix series you said you’re watching?

F: Ohh! It is called Peaky Blinders and I am so into it. There are only 6 episodes in the first season. I am trying my very best to pace myself because I don’t want it to be over. It is based on a real gang in 1919 in England. Check more out about it here.

L:  Are you a fan of soup(s)?

F: Interesting that you ask, Lulu! Today we have someone from Soupure coming to our office to drop off some samples of clean soups. I am all about it. Last week, I made homemade chicken soup since I wasn’t feeling well. Homemade soup is the best soup there is.

L:  If you had to listen to one song on repeat for the next hour, what would it be?

F: Ok, so hear me out. There is a documentary on Netflix called Reincarnated. It is about Snoop Dogg making a reggae album in Jamaica. I am sucker for basically anything I feel attached to. I have been listening to this song and I think I could play it on repeat for the next hour. I think I am embarrassed.

L:  Do you get Columbus Day on Monday off from work?

F: Nope, I sure don’t. I don’t even know when it is. Next Monday?

L:  What is your favorite lip balm?

F: Probably Lucas’ Paw Paw Ointment from Australia. You can buy it through our shop!

F:  What is your favorite element and why?

L:  The element of surprise!  It gets you every time.

F:  What does your horoscope say for today and does it resonate with you?

L:  Thursday, Oct 2, 2014 — Scorpio It’s wise to think twice before sharing our feelings as the Moon visits emotionally conservative Capricorn. However, we may grow agitated enough to express ourselves anyhow when the Moon squares radical Uranus early this morning. Later, the Moon’s alignment with joyful Jupiter encourages optimism, but it’s not healthy to take our new-found confidence too far. Ultimately, a lunar connection to calculating Saturn supports logic over emotion.

Eh, I guess I’ll pass on sharing whether or not it resonates with me.  😉

F:  Would you like to pull an Osho Zen Tarot card and share it with us?

L:  Sure!  Let’s hope it out-balances that horoscope.

This is what happens when we forget that the mind is meant to be a servant, and start to allow it to run our lives. The head is filled with mechanisms, the mouth is ranting and raving, and the whole surrounding atmosphere is being polluted by this factory of arguments and opinions.

‘But wait,’ you say. ‘The mind is what makes us human, it’s the source of all progress, all great truths.’ If you believe that, try an experiment: go into your room, shut the door, turn on a tape recorder, and give yourself total permission to say whatever is ‘on your mind.’ If you really allow it to all come out, without any censorship or editing, you’ll be amazed at the amount of rubbish that comes spewing forth.

The Page of Clouds is telling you that somebody, somewhere, is stuck in a ‘head trip.’ Take a look and make sure it isn’t you.

I pull this card all the time!  I’ve never done the tape recorder thing but I believe it would be true.

F:  If you could live in any international city, where would it be?

L:  I really love Amsterdam, though it gets so cold in the winter.  I think the answer to this question may be somewhere I’ve never been.

F:  What moisturizer will you use for the fall/winter season?

L: Can you see my dry skin all the way from California?!  I’m actually needing to restock on face moisturizer.  I ran out a bit ago but I’ve been using some free samples that the salesperson gave me the last time I bought mascara.  I’ve also been putting Jojoba oil on my face but I don’t think it’s moisturizing enough.  I’m planning to go back to my old standby, this First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer.  Tried and true.

L: How are you beating the LA heat?

F: The heat wave has passed and I gotta tell you – California ain’t got nothing on an East Coast heat wave. Sure, it was hot. It was also totally fine. I will say that the people on the East side of Los Angles had it way worse.

L: What kind of things were on your mind when you woke up this morning?

F: I checked the waves at the beach as soon as I woke up this morning . All I wanted to do was surf.

L: Do you want to share the link to the post about you on the Clean blog?

F: Last week I was featured on the Clean Program’s blog. It was a fun thing to do and I would love to share it. Check it out!

L:  What is the last song that you listened to?

F: I just got home from dinner with my friends, when I came home Al was blasting this song that he loves:

L:  How’s your heart?

F: My heart is so full of love. I have been just filled to the top with love since Suz passed away. I hope it lasts for a very, very long time.

F: Have you had any meaningful conversations this week?

L: Definitely! I have been keeping myself pretty busy lately and have had evening plans with friends almost every day since I’ve been back in NYC. What I have found particularly meaningful are instances in which friends have acknowledged some of the loss I’ve experienced lately and are willing to listen to me talk about it. I feel pretty lucky to have as many people care about me as I do & it makes me want to be a better friend in return.

F: What is something that you have learned over the past couple of weeks?

L: When you have the opportunity to see someone you love on their deathbed, go.

F: Show me a picture out of your window.

L: Lots of activity down below!

F: What are you looking forward to?

L: My future! I have a lot of ideas for some creative pursuits and partnerships and I’m going to spend the next phase of life trying to materialize them. It feels exciting.

F: What is your desktop background and why?

L: I’ve been rocking this pretty lady for some time, ’cause I like her moves!
