Holistic Living

While Farrell is certainly the sister with the culinary skills in this duo, I do have a few easy go-to’s when I decide to spend a little time in the kitchen.  Qunioa tacos (i.e. substitute quinoa for rice) hover near the top of that list.  They require minimal prep, can be classed up a notch for a group dinner, make for great leftovers and are pretty healthy.  They also go quite well with fresh guacamole and a margarita – two of my all time favorites.

I saw, and tried to mimic, this idea for jarring the leftovers.  Mine didn’t achieve nearly the loveliness of that picture but I still enjoy the concept.

What’s on your go-to list?

We arrived safely in Bali a few days ago, after 20 hours of traveling from Australia. The weather was a bit overcast when we arrived but the sun was peaking out now and then. We stayed in Kuta for a night and then headed to the Gili Islands. We are excited to be in a new place and I hope to have pictures for you later in the week.

Because I am carrying everything with me while we travel, I have really only been using a couple of products to maintain my basic human needs. I thought I would share my favorites with you.

1.  Soapwalla Deodorant

I have used other deodorants here and there in a pinch, but this one has proved to get me through any situation. It lasts a long time and I stay dry all day. It has been wonderful.

2.  Lucas’ Pawpa Ointment

This ointment was originally given to me by Amy for Christmas and it was amazing at home. Since I have been traveling, I don’t leave anywhere without it. It’s good for lips, dry skin and sun burn.  You name it, it cures it. I use it mostly for my lips.

3. Probiotics

I take these probiotics every day and really feel the difference when skip it.  Since I have been in so many places in a short period of time, and exposed to such different food, building good bacteria in my tum tum has been important.

3. Harmonic Conditioner

I was pretty worried about my hair getting really knotty and looking a mess while traveling, but honestly, it’s been awesome. All I do is wash with conditioner and sleep on it and it looks amazing. Curly-haired friends, try it. I have been shocked!

4. Tempro-Pedic SleepMask

Yeah, that’s right, Tempur-Pedic! Thanks to my Dad, who hooked me up with the best sleep mask ever. I make sure it’s with me all the time. Simple pleasures, people.

Farrell has been quite influential in my life with regard to using as many low/no chemical beauty products as possible – and getting real about what is in the products we use on our bodies.  In her honor, I thought I’d give you a little run down on the facial products I’ve been using lately.

1. Homemade Honey + Sugar Lip Scrub – For a quick and easy lip exfoliator, I mix a little sugar and honey together, massage it onto my lips and leave it on for 5-10 minutes.

2. Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser – I’m really enjoying this cleanser which has a very mild scrub component to it.

3. Coconut Oil  I mainly use this coconut oil as a make-up remover.  Occasionally, I apply it after I’ve washed my face and leave it on for 15-30 mins as a moisturizer.

4. Apivita Natural Oil – Almond – I often apply this oil instead of a moisturizer at night.  I also like to use it around my eyes (I’m not sure whether this is advised or not).

5. Korres Pomegranate Mattifying Primer – Korres also has an all natural line.  While this product feels great, I couldn’t find it in the Cosmetics Database and it seems that there was a pretty big difference in the ingredients used in Korres vs. Korres Natural products.  Shucks!

6. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – I can’t say enough good things about this moisturizer.  It got me through the winter, when my face can become super dry.  It’s wonderful and anyone who has dry, flakey or sensitive skin should hook themselves up.

7. EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41  I am also a major supporter of EltaMD’s tinted sunscreen.  It is super light but also does a great job evening out your skin tone.  The only slightly difficult thing is that you have to buy it from a doctor’s office but the EltaMD website has an easy to use distributor locator.

Take a look back at some of Farrell’s favorite natural beauty products, make-up and deodorant!

Our homie, Erin of Well in L.A., invited us to participate in her Dream Big series and we are featured today on Erin’s blog!  So, hop on over to check out Farrell’s and my thoughts on our approach to work, wellness and what we’re all about!

Ever since taking classes to become certified as a holistic health and nutrition counselor, I have been obsessed with kale.  Mostly massaged kale salad.  Every time I make this kale salad, people beg for more. Once you have had a taste, your body constantly asks for it.  In honor of Lauren’s cleanse, I decided to share this quick and simple recipe.  Just try it, and you will see:

Massaged Kale Salad:
Bushel of kale
Avocado
1/2 White Onion, chopped, sliced or diced
1/2 Lemon squeezed
2 tables spoons of Exra Virgin Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper to taste
Optional: One clove of garlic (I love it!)Rip the stems off the kale.  Put all the ingredients in a bowl and massage the kale for as long as you can.  The avocado will add a creamy texture.  The lemon and EVOO will break down the kale to a soft and tender consistency.

There are so many variations on this salad.  You can add strawberries, raspberries, red onion, etc.

If you have a favorite kale salad, I would love more variation ideas!

Enjoy!

Hey everyone.  I just got back from a quick trip to Montreal, which I’m looking forward to telling you about later this week.  For the time being, suffice it to say, we ate and drank very well – and often.  I have a pretty quiet week ahead and I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to revisit a simple, self-designed cleanse I have done a couple of times.  It’s pretty much just a 3 day raw food situation for the purpose of giving your body a chance to slow down, eliminate toxins and allow for a subtle reboot to the system. It is generally advised that one do this type of cleanse during a time that you can otherwise take things easy.

Things I’m going to avoid:

Caffeine (Eeks! Wish me luck!), Sugars, Alcohol, Dairy, Meat, Processed Foods

In my opinion, the goal of these things should not be a quick fix to loose weight or “get healthy.”  I don’t think it’s necessary to feel hungry while on a cleanse, but rather to be really mindful about what you’re feeding yourself and how you are feeling.  In the past, I found the reintroduction of various foods/drinks after the 3 days to be among the most beneficial and informative aspects of cleansing, as it gives you an opportunity to become aware of the various effects produced by specific items.

It’s looking like we have a few days of rain in store in NYC.  And after a whirlwind trip home to Cleveland over the weekend, I could use the soggy weather to spend some time at home tending to the little things that pile up when you haven’t been around for awhile.  Lucky for me, the atmosphere in my apartment has been greatly enhanced by the addition of Farrell’s plants and her boyfriend’s record player, which they generously moved over to my place before heading out of town, and which make the setting over here all the more suitable to really embrace some springtime showers.

“Colorblind” by designer/illustrator Mathiole

Laying low and setting aside adequate time for myself to do things like unpack my suitcase, put away my laundry and go through the mail has been for me something akin to an acquiring taste.  On an unconscious level, for much of my life I think I put off such tasks, largely to avoid feelings that might come along with “not doing something.”

The other day I was listening to a podcast which was discussing the process of feeling rather than avoiding your feelings.  It discussed the Buddhist practice of tonglen, and since then I’ve been wanting to talk about it with you.  As I understand it, tonglen helps us experience and process life’s biggest feelings.  You know, the title wave type feelings that I hope you don’t experience very often but come into all of our lives at some time or another, and feel like they could just completely take us out.  (I imagine tonglen is also completely applicable for more day to day experiences as well.  I feel pretty sure that Buddhism – or the universe for that matter – isn’t judging the magnitude of our feelings in this regard.)

The practice is to train yourself to recognize, on the onset of such a feeling, that other people in the world also experience the same feeling.  “Just the thought that other people feel this opens it up” as Pema Chodron explains.  All you need to do is allow yourself to fully feel the feeling as you inhale.  Then, on your exhale, you release the feeling in honor of freeing everyone who experiences it from it.  That’s it.  All you gotta do.  On the spot or in a meditation – either way does it.

Tonglen dissipates the illusion of isolation and facilitates empathy.  You can read more about it here.

Although this image might feel like too much to take in, I do think it is important to be aware of the chemicals in your beauty products.  After slowly transitioning to all natural products myself, I have found that I have fewer headaches, less skin irritation and an over all clearer mind.

If you are interested in looking up if your products are safe or not, plug them into the Skin Deep Database. You will find that some of your products are safer than others.

If you are in search of new products, check out some of my favorites here, here and here.

Abundance is a feeling and when I close my eyes, it looks in my mind like these two photos merged together into one.  It is a word which is often spoken in conjunction with the notion of flow, conveying its power of movement and freedom.  There is an ease and continuity which is unhalted by anything that might block its pathway.  It is the choice to turn away from the feeling, and conversation, of lack, and retrain the mind to feel plentiful, perhaps even before the plenty is before you.  It is the new moon in Taurus, which arrived over the weekend.  It is the Abundance tarot card I drew this morning.  It’s the dime that was on my subway seat, and the check that arrived today in the mail.  It is Farrell’s “morning abundance song,” which I guarantee, if you had heard would render you rich for days to come.  It is the faith that you already have, and will continue to receive, everything you will ever need.

Sell the Sizzle by Kasey McMahon

We’ve posted about spring cleaning a few times in the last couple of weeks (mostly, as it relates to de-cluttering and cleaning out closets).  But what about the same concept as it applies to one’s ideas?  When we hold onto things emotionally, they manifest as tention, tightness, aliments and disease in the body.  When we hold onto objects we no longer need, they clutter our spaces and weigh us down.  So when we hold onto ideas, it only makes sense that they would stagnate, instead of flourish.

We de-clutter to clear and make space.  We take baths and get massages to relax and rejuvenate.  And the natural circulation of our ideas best positions us to live freely, and with ease.  To grow, to evolve and to improve.  Or better said, in the word of En Vogue, “Free your mind and the rest will follow.”
