F:  What have you been making in your kitchen?

L:  A mess.  Ha.  Sorry, I couldn’t resist.  Actually some friends stayed in my apartment when I went to Cleveland for Easter.  As a thank you, they left me a refrigerator full of groceries (as well as flowers and Girl Scout cookies – all such a treat!).  It inspired me to start making one big fruit salad, and one dry green salad to eat throughout the week.  So far, so good.  I also made a spinach/gruyere/mushroom/onion frittata that is pretty delicious.  Big moves over here.

F:  What the best clothing item that you have purchased lately?

Mom and I went on a major shopping spree when I was home.  The whole experience was completely, and shamelessly gratifying so it’s hard for me to pick one favorite.  Instead I’ll just say that sometimes it feels really good to update your look.

F:  What purse have you been rocking?

L:  See above.  One of the things I came away with was a new black purse.  It has a long shoulder strap and lays pretty flat.  It’s been good because I don’t carry around nearly as much unnecessary stuff as I usually do.

F:  Have you been practicing yoga? Where?

L:  I had been having the hardest time getting back into a regular yoga practice, which is annoying because after every yoga class I take, all I can think about is how much I love yoga.  As of this weekend, I think I’ve set myself back on a good path, with a welcomed variety in the classes I’m doing.

F:  What are you going to do this weekend?

L:  I don’t know yet.

Bonus: Do you miss me?

L:  Always.

We hope you all had a good, restful weekend and that you’re expecting a big ol’ tax refund in your bank account!  Enjoy the pictures from your weekend and ours below!

“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.” -Marc Riboud

Every Monday we post the pictures you’ve taken recently.  Send us one of yours for next week!

As I have said before, making new friendships and strengthening existing relationships has been a wonderful and unanticipated by-product of blogging.  One of the great new friendships I have made is with Kate of Art Hound and Buy Some Damn Art.  Together, she and I are hosting an offline series for NYC bloggers, e-business owners and women passionate about creating and exploring online.  If you live in NYC and fall into one (or more) of these categories, I hope you can join us.

Taking It Offline

Event Information:

While there are a million ways to connect online via Facebook, Pinterest, etc., the reality of blogging or running an online business is that it can be isolating!  Taking It Offline is a meet-up for women in NYC who are pursuing their entrepreneurial or creative passions online (or who wish to start doing so in the future).  If you’d like to meet other NYC bloggers or business-owners, get feedback on your awesome ideas for a blog/business, ask silly questions about WordPress or just socialize, join us for the first Taking It Offline from 2-4 p.m. on April 27th.  Location address to follow RSVP.  Visit our Facebook event page.

The Shard London’s Tallest Tower By Renzo Piano-12

This week has taken me a little all over the place – and it’s only just about halfway done.  In chronological order, I have slept in, ventured out and centered back.  I’ve shown up, played a game and had fun.  I have dressed up and held back and learned new things about people I see every day.  I got drunk and gossiped.  I came home, I vegged-out.  I woke up early and I mourned a friend’s loss.  I’ve been rejected, empowered, engaged and engaging.  I’ve been pulled back into my past and have experienced new hopes for the future.  I tried adding an avocado to my green smoothie (ill-advised); I wasted away a lot of time.  I felt grateful frequently and often self-critical.  I’ve seen a little bit of everything.  I imagine you have too.

Today I’m so excited to introduce you to one of my oldest & closest friends, and new blogger, Katie of Suburbling.  Katie has always been a natural when it comes to writing and her genuine, thoughtful and down-to-earth personality shines through in all of her posts.  I can’t wait to see how her blog continues to develop and I’m certain you’ll find it worth returning to again and again!  Thanks, Katie!

Blogging Advice from an Internet Wallflower

I’ve been blogging for approximately two weeks now, so when Lauren and Farrell invited me to be the Homie of the Day, I decided it was high-time I dispensed some advice on blogging.

Really. I’m going to give some advice on blogging.

Fear not, I don’t purport to be an expert just yet. But I do have a little advice from my two weeks as a blogger, and the weeks before when I was thinking about blogging and thinking some more about blogging.

See, the decision to start a blog was a tough one for me because I suffer from a severe case of internet shyness. I was a late-comer to Facebook and rarely update my status. My Pinterest pages are woefully empty. I prefer to reply instead of reply-all. But, mostly thanks to Lauren, I took a deep breath and got out there. And I’m having fun with it.

So, here’s my advice for other internet wallflowers:

1. Just start writing. Write what interests you. Write what’s in your head.
2. Imagine you’re writing for a good friend. Don’t worry about appealing to a certain audience, or what others might think. Don’t wonder if someone will find you interesting.
3. Use blogs you love as models. (The first few posts I did felt like I was pretending to blog.)
4. Decide how often you want to post and stick to it. The best way to be interesting is to keep saying new and different things.
5. Enjoy it. The blog should be an outpouring of things you’d want to read and talk about — therefore, lots of fun to put together.

And now, here’s some great advice from an experienced blogger on how to blog for the long haul. And some on blogging as a career. And a compilation of blogging advice from bloggers much more experienced than I.

So, thanks, Lauren, for making me get off my chair and join the conversation. And thanks to Lauren and Farrell for inviting me to Sister Disco, clearly one of my favorite blogs.

Now, other internet wallflowers, if I can do it, anyone can. Your blog is calling you. Get started.

When I lived in India, several years ago now, I lived in an older Indian woman’s home.  She was a doctor and a widow and had traveled to New York while her husband was still alive.  When she got here, she watched the news and was so scared by the stories she saw, she barely left the apartment she was in. She did however like the ice cream, and the cheese. And she also liked that you saw every type of face on the street in New York. She went on about how wonderful and interesting it was to be on a New York street, and to look around and see every type of person.

I spend a lot of time referencing where I’m from and talking about how that place makes me me. I love that about New York, and I love that the place I talk about is Cleveland. I like that I’m in a place that makes this experience a prominent component of my life. But it is also noticeable to me, at times, that I know another version of life: one where strangers are more known to each other – as true or false as that may actually be.

It’s an intricate dance between blending in and standing out.  Each is appealing some of the time but looses its charm in excess, and like many things it can be difficult to sustain the balance.

Farrell sent me the following questions to answer for this week’s Coast to Coast post. This is what I had to say to them:

1. Since I know you always have an interesting one, what is your desktop background?

I still have the vintage sports team photo I mentioned in this post up as my background. However, I’m about ready for a change and am debating between going back to my previous background:

Julie Mehretu - Mural

Julie Mehretu’s “Mural”

or changing it to this photo, which I’ve also posted before, but may love too much to see it there everyday, if that makes any sense:

2. Do you think of yourself as an artist?

Yes, I do. I’ll probably have more to say about that at some point down the line but for now, thanks for asking.

3. Have you been juicing or drinking green smoothies?

Unfortunately not and I miss it.

4. What is something that has inspired you this week?

I’ve been listening to back to back episodes of the “Design Matters with Debbie Millman: 2009 – 2013” podcast.  Aside from having super inspiring guests, I find Debbie Millman’s interview style to be incredibly inspiring.  I don’t know anything about her but her questions are both passionate and smart; I just have this feeling that she would be an amazing person to be around.

5. What are you looking forward to the most right now?

Spring & summer!
