I have a real tendency to over-think things and last week I let that inclination go into overdrive.  The results were not pretty.  To say nothing of overcoming internal resistance to changing our minds, it amazes me what a fresh perspective can bring to your daily experience.  Along those lines, did you know:

-It has been shown that stress is bad for you if you believe it is:

*

-What you believe about the food you eat affects the way your body metabolizes it:

*

-Anger is the body’s emotional & protective response to a perceived threat.  It matters not whether the threat is real or imagined.  “To effectively reduce or eliminate the anger in your life, change the core beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations of the mind.”

Remember back in the day when MTV did different unplugged shows? Well, this isn’t what this post is about. I found out about this new meditation place in Santa Monica called Unplug Meditation. I was drawn to their look and aesthetic at first and thought the idea could be very interesting. The first week of their opening is free and so I thought I would head on over.

For me, it was a great reminder to get out in the world and try new things and also to keep up with my mediation.

I am not sure how much I will frequent Unplug, but I really like the idea and wanted to pass it on.

ten minutes every day to close my eyes & see what i feel.  to try to disconnect the feeling from the story and simply allow the feeling to be felt.  to recognize the tendency to suppress discomfort and to let it be, without needing to know why it’s there.  to remind myself, again and again, of how i want to live.  of my sole ability & responsibility to experience that life.  right now.  and to keep creating the time and space to be present and move myself forward.

Welp, my last day of the 21-day Clean Gut program was this past Friday. The challenge of it took me by surprise. I thought it would be a piece of cake. In some ways it was, and in unexpected ways, it wasn’t.

I learned some things about myself: I stick to the rules too much. I tend to not eat enough. I am the worst when I am tired. I kind of need caffeine to feel like “myself”(scary thought).

All in all, I felt pretty low energy. I should mention that I was taking additional supplements for gut repair, so it made things more intense. The last week of the program I added in bananas and sweet potatoes. It really was a game changer.

I went into the program thinking that I might get some insight into the cause of my monthly headaches, but no dice. On to the next trick.

As always, I will keep you posted 🙂

have you ever breathed deep
expanding your belly
but focusing on your heart?

to the place where I sense a pain,
then a fear, an internal tension
living amongst openness
and expansion

where i’d have to face a series of unknowns
and possibly spend a good deal of time

wandering,

or worse yet: staying still

and only nothing, or hardship
would follow.

have you ever started breathing
into your heart?
while writing words
that named your fears

(then posted it on the internet because you’re a blogger)

It has the power to create everything.”

W3ll People – Narcissist Foundation Stick

I use this all natural foundation every day. It is a cream-based roll on stick that is so easy to use. I love this whole makeup line. I always feel good knowing that I am using a product that has a lot of integrity.

Shea Moisture – Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

I have been going through a hair crisis situation out here in the desert. I have lived in a lot of places and can usually find a good routine with my hair, but nothing is working for me out here. I have been doing some research and found this product at CVS. I have used it twice and I really love it. It smells SO good. Not sure how “clean” it is, but the Skin Deep Database rates most of Shea Moisture’s products as a zero. So that is amazing.

Josie Maran – Argan Mascara

It can feel almost impossible to find an all natural mascara. I have tried a lot of things, but Josie Maran (at Sephora) is my favorite so far. It is still not the most full night time lash, but it works great for every day use.

Acure – Brightening Facial Scrub

This facial scrub leaves my skin feeling so smooth. It has such fun ingredients like sea kelp and chorella. It’s bright green! I have been really loving it.

I would love any recommendations of your favorite natural products. If you have any, send ’em on over! Enjoy!

There was one day this week that I felt angry and aggressive. It wasn’t towards anyone or anything in particular. I was just agitated and tired. I had had enough of everything. I snapped at my sister, was short with people and ended up going home early. I wasn’t used to feeling those feelings and it felt uncomfortable. I was fully aware in the moment that I was cleansing and it will pass. I wasn’t over-thinking it. It just was and I felt it.

There has been somewhat of a calm after that day. My thoughts have been running less and less and I find that I want to be alone or somewhere quiet and calm. This whole week has been a welcome surprise because I am not “myself” but it feels nice to feel these things and feel this way.

I know I am not saying much or really going anywhere with this. I think I am just realizing today that it is good to feel things fully so they don’t hide away inside of you and pop back up when you least expect it. It was nice to feel angry and then it was nice to not be anymore.

I am on Day 4 of Clean Gut. I am doing it with almost my entire team and it’s going ok so far. Honestly, this morning I am feeling a little headachy and tired.

However, on Saturday we had a chicken pot pie feast! Here is a great recipe for “clean” pot pie.

Chicken Pot Pie

Serves 6

Ingredients

Filling

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 to 4 shallots, minced
  • 1 cup sliced carrots
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced and divided into two equal
  • portions
  • 2 to 3 boneless chicken breasts (about 1½ pounds), diced
  • 1 cup green peas, fresh or frozen
  • 2 cups chicken broth (may need more but start with this
  • amount)
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • ½ red onion, minced
  • 1½ cup raw cashews, soaked for 4 to 6 hours, then drained
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Crust

  • 1½ cups blanched almond flour
  • ½ cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon dried herbs, such as sage, rosemary, thyme,
  • or chives (fresh herbs will work too; just use a bit more)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon water

Directions

1. Heat 2 tablespoons of the coconut oil in a large skillet set over medium-high heat.

2. Add the shallots and sauté them for 5 minutes, or until

they are translucent.

3. Add the carrots, celery, and half the minced garlic, and

continue to sauté until the carrots begin to soften, about 3

to 5 minutes.

4. Add the chicken and cook until most of the pink hue is

gone from the flesh.

5. Add the peas and ½ cup of the chicken broth.

6. Continue simmering until the vegetables are tender and

the chicken is fully cooked.

7. Salt and pepper to taste, and set aside.

8. In a medium skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of

coconut oil over medium-high heat.

9. Add the red onion and sauté 5 to 8 minutes.

10. Add the other half of the garlic and sauté for an additional

3 minutes. Remove from the heat.

11. In a blender, purée the onion mixture, cashews, 1½ cups

of the chicken broth, cayenne, and the optional paprika

until smooth.

As has been previously mentioned, I finished the 21-day Clean Cleanse last week.  I have to admit that it feels like a pretty epic accomplishment (and is actually 24 days, if you include the initial 3-day pre-cleanse).  I’ve never been one to set, or follow, rules for what and when I eat, so this part alone was quite a new experience for me.  Because Farrell works at Clean and I wanted to see what her job and company are all about, I did the cleanse from the Clean kit which includes shake packs for breakfast and dinner, probiotics and supplements.  However, I think it is worth mentioning that anyone can do the cleanse on their own by following the same program which is laid out in the book Clean by Dr. Alejandro Junger.  In either case, the idea is to remove common toxins, irritants and allergens (i.e. soy, diary, gluten, refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol, etc.) for a full body detox as well as to better understand the effects these things have on your body when you reintroduce them post-cleanse.

Physically, I felt great almost immediately (minus a full afternoon/evening caffeine withdrawal headache on day 2 of the pre-cleanse).  I am a daily coffee drinker and knew this would be one of the hardest parts of the cleanse for me, so I started reducing the amount of coffee I was drinking about a week before I even started the pre-cleanse.  I think this was really helpful for me.  I never really stopped missing coffee during the cleanse but I didn’t feel a real physical need for it either. The same was true of alcohol.  A huge part of my social life includes food and drinks and feeling like I couldn’t socialize in the ways I’m used to was hard for me.  I would often walk past bustling bars and restaurants around the city and feel a sort of sad longing for the days when I used to laugh with friends in those settings.  Ridiculous but true.

A few other thoughts/reflections on my experience:

– It is nearly impossible to buy food that is made only of ingredients with which I am familiar.  Preparing your own food seems to be the way to go if you’re trying to eat clean.

– Doing the cleanse with someone made all the difference.  As a friend of mine told me somewhat disgustedly, “You know what they say, a couple that cleanses together…”  Jokes aside, this component was really huge for me.  The cleanse kind of takes over your life and being able to share that experience on a day to day basis made the whole thing much easier for me than I think it would have otherwise been. Along those same lines, I also submersed myself in all things Clean. Obviously Farrell was a huge source of support.  I also listened to all five Clean Program conference calls for people cleansing at the start of 2014.  Basically I found that, particularly for the first and second weeks, I needed to focus almost entirely on the experience in order to really do it and all of these supports and sources of information were way more important to me than I would have ever imagined.

Preparation is key.  I have a tendency to wait too long before eating, even if I’m hungry, so when I finally do eat I make less healthy choices.  Having food at home that was Clean approved & going out to get lunch before I was starving made a big difference in my days.

– Routine is hard for me & I don’t do well with boredom and monotony.  I had a pretty horrific day 14 through 16.  The novelty of the program had significantly worn off, my social interactions were at a real low and the January cold was really getting to me.  Though I already knew this about myself, I really saw how important it is for me to funnel my energy into exercise and creativity – and how often I forgo those things with other distractions.  It wasn’t a fun couple of days.

– I liked doing the cleanse from the kit more than I anticipated I would.  Having a physical and material structure was really helpful and kept me on track.

– I want to stay clean!  I have to say I felt consistently rested throughout the cleanse.  My skin looked and felt good.  I never went to bed or woke up feeling heavy, lethargic or groggy.  It was great.  That being said, I have reintroduced all things back into my diet.  However, I’m still trying to make the best decisions I can and am finding that, for me, that means (1) considering how something will make me feel before I consume it and (2) acting in accordance with that.  These aren’t easy things and I’m by no means saying I’m doing this successfully all of the time.  It is simply my intention and one that I’m going to keep working at.
