I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the concept of success and the importance of determining what it means to me personally. What I’m figuring out is that it is dangerous to allow status to play too large a role in my measurement of success because it can override the things I truly value.

Yesterday I went to yoga and the teacher shared this quote from Buddha to end the class, “It is better to travel well than to arrive.” I’m fascinated by these words for some reason, completely drawn to them and now guided by them.

F: How is it to spend a week in Cleveland in the first week of May?

L: Aside from a few chilly days, it is absolutely gorgeous here! There are tulips in bloom all around. The lake is totally captivating and the sunsets have been so colorful. It’s a beautiful time of year in Cleveland!

F: What is something you can not wait to do once you get back to NYC?

L: Hmmm…right now I’m so focused on getting on the road and then having everything in order for the markets I’m doing on Saturday and Sunday that I haven’t really thought much further than that. I think it’s going to be great just to get out and walk around once I’m there.

F: What is your favorite item for the Disco Emporium that you purchased since you have been home?

L: I went up to this vintage store on Detroit Rd. in Lakewood called “Future No Future” and definitely splurged on some great finds. There’s one yellow dress with bright flowers on it that is a little big for me but I’m considering keeping it and having it tailored to wear to some of the weddings I’m going to this summer.

F: Do you miss LA? If so, what do you miss the most? If not, no worries 🙂

L: I miss you guys. I miss the grapefruit swirl at Sweet Rose. I think about LA and the palm trees and the feeling there a lot but I don’t think I’ve been away long enough to seriously miss it.

F: Would you rather climb the highest mountain or go to the deepest depths of the ocean?

L: Yeeks! Neither! The thought of climbing the highest mountain sounds terrifying and does not appeal to me at all. I love the water and would generally choose it over a mountain but I don’t think I want to be at its deepest depths. Maybe if I could fly to the top of the highest mountain and get out, that would be my choice.

HEARING a lot these days about how blogs are past their prime.

WANTING to start wearing more of the jewelry I own after going through all my mother’s with her.

RESISTING checking the NYC weekend forecast out of a superstitious fear that my stressing about the weather will bring rain.

I’m so excited to be heading back to NYC this week to check in on my apartment, catch up with friends and set up Disco Emporium shop at the Hester Street Fair and Artists & Fleas Williamsburg market this coming weekend!  I’ve been gone from New York for almost five months, just shy of the six month hiatus I took to India in 2005.  I remember being so anxious to get back into my life at that time; and I was shocked at how little things seemed to have changed in the city while I was away.  I feel a bit like I gave up the concept of home when I started Airbnb-ing my apartment last fall and moving around every few weeks/months, so I’m curious to see how it feels to be back in New York and in my apartment this time around.  I don’t have that same longing to dive-in, head first to the fast-paced New York lifestyle that I did when I was 25.  But then again, I am returning this time at a very different phase of life and New York is nothing if not full of endless possibility.

If you are in NYC and around this weekend, come say hello!

I’m heading back east for at least a couple of months later tonight.  I’ve liked being in Los Angeles so much more than I thought I would and am somewhat bummed to leave (though also excited for plans ahead).  Below are some shots of the good times I’ve had since being out here.  Please bring out the sunshine, east coast!

F: What is the thing that made you laugh the most this week?

L: I think I laughed the hardest this week when we were joking around at your apartment the other day. I know you have some video of my madness but I’m trusting you’ll keep it to yourself.

F: What is the most inspiring thing you heard recently?

L: People are real, but the crowd disappoints

Every crowd, sooner or later, will let you down.

The crowd contains a shoplifter, or a heckler, or an anonymous boor who leaves a snarky comment.

The crowd loses interest, the crowd denigrates the work, the crowd isn’t serious.

Worst of all, sometimes the crowd turns into a mob, out of control and bloodthirsty.

But people, people are real.

People will look you in the eye.

People will keep their promises. People can grow, can change, can be generous.

When in doubt, ignore the crowd (and forgive them). When possible, look for people instead.

Scale is overrated, again and again.

F: What picture most represents your time in LA?

L: This one.

F: What are you looking forward to the most in the next couple of months?

L: Lake Erie.

F: When and where will your next Disco Emporium sale be?

L: In New York City! May 9th at Hester Street Fair and May 10th at Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg. I’m super excited!

1) Louis C.K. on Why New York is better than L.A. (via Business Insider)  I don’t always love his humor but I do really enjoy Louis C.K.’s perspectives on life.  The whole NYC vs L.A. comparison is only a small part of this interview but makes for a good headline, I guess.  Really the two cities are so different, in my opinion, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to dwell on which place is better.  Anyway, a worthwhile read.  -Lauren

2) Children Find Their Moms (via Aplus) If you are looking for something to sweeten up your day, watching children finding their moms while they are blindfolded will do the trick. –Farrell

3) Lazy: A Manifesto (via Tim Ferriss Podcast) is a 15 minute audio clip of a chapter in Tim Kreider’s book, We Learn Nothing.  With humor, it speaks to our culture’s reliance on being so busy or too busy, almost as a status symbol.  Food for thought.  -Lauren

4) Call For Help (via This American Life) I can just barely imagine what it would be like to be in a serious emergency. This podcast is a collection of stories about people who were in need of serious help and what they went through during the process. –Farrell

6) What Finger Length Reveals about your Personality (via Sunny Skyz) In case you were wondering how the length of your fingers relates to who you are, this article is for you! –Farrell

It’s been about six months since I left my job and hit the road, so to speak.  This has definitely been a unique period of time and I feel grateful that I’ve been able to take this time, basically to just be.  I have done and seen a lot over the past couple of months it’s nice to look back and remember that.
