Clearly I should have worn the layered button down blouse with my over-sized handbag and above the knee skirt.  What was I thinking?!  In this overly pulled together skirt suit and classic bag I screamed standard, safe…predictable.  I didn’t stand a chance under the black and white lense.  It wasn’t my fault, exactly.  No one told me that there would be a geometric overlay.  In two colors no less.  My shoes were adventurous but how would you ever know?  And it’s not like his shoes were anything exciting.  But they were visible and that’s something, I guess.  Next time I’d know better.  I’d loose the understated but eternally classic double button jacket.  I’d shorten my skirt.  And I’d inevitably second guess the change when I spotted her looking just like I do today.

I hope you all had a restful weekend.  It was a pretty gloomy/rainy Saturday and Sunday in NYC and I (literally) fell into a bit of bad luck to culminate the weekend. Needless to say, I’m happy to shake it off and begin a new week. But before putting the weekend completely behind us, enjoy today’s round of pictures from the weekend.

F: What at this moment are you most grateful for?

L:  Right now, I am most grateful for the combination of freedom and security I have in my life.  {Knock on wood}

F: What blog/website gives you the most inspiration lately?

L:  Well it’s not exactly a website but I signed up to receive this email, called theSkimm, which provides a summary of the news every morning in my inbox.  It’s pretty succinct and is meant to be communicated in the way a know-it-all friend might tell you about world events.  It’s made me feel a lot more knowledgeable, yet not bogged down by about what’s going on in the world.

F: What place would you like to travel to next?

L:  I’d like to spend 2-3 weeks in a big old, remote country house.

F: Have you found the perfect lip color yet?

L: Not at all.  If I wear lipstick these days, it’s usually some combination of about six different not quite it colors I carry around with me.  It works out fine but I still want to be one of those women who has her perfect shades.

F: What are you most looking forward to?

L:  Re-establishing a regular yoga practice.

I’ve been thinking lately, now that she’s back and settled, I really miss following Farrell’s travels through her posts here.  There were a lot of things about her travel posts that I liked, one of which was her Noteworthy series, a kind-of collections of lessons learned on the road.  I had a bit of an adventure away from home last weekend so I thought I’d revive the idea.

A few weeks ago, I saw a picture on Instagram of these beautiful vintage flower stamps. Farrell and I are throwing a bridal shower over the summer for our soon to be sister-in-law and knew we had to have them for the invitations.  I just think they are so beautiful and feminine.

They also reminded me of this array of flowers, which I snatched on my way out of a conference a couple of weeks ago (they started as a centerpiece that I broke into smaller bouquets). Aren’t they just lovely?!  They mostly lasted a pretty long time and felt like such a treat to have in little arrangements all around my apartment.

I just can’t listen to enough music these days.  I’ve also been doing a lot of DJing for my office mates at work. From time to time, we have what we call Power Hours in which I pick (or take a request for) a specific musician/band. We then listen to that artist for as long is left in the day, or until the Power Hour reaches another such natural conclusion. A few of our recents that quickly come to mind are Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, The Brian Ferry Orchestra The Jazz Age and Elvis Presley.  It makes for a good time.

Meanwhile, I’ve also been building my own rotation:

When Farrell moved out of New York, I inherited her plants and they have completely changed the feel of my apartment.  They literally add so much my life to my space.  I’ve been waiting for the nicer weather to come to do some repotting, and I think the time is either near or here.

I have officially planted my herb garden! Because we have no outdoor space, I bought 3 planters for underneath my long window. It was hard to decide what herbs to plant and how to pair them. After extensive research on drainage and pairing herbs, I was set. Here they are in all of their glory!

Planter 1: Dill, Rosemary, Sage

Planter 2: Jalapeno, Cilantro, Jalapeno

Planter 3: Apple Mint, Peppermint

I know there are many other herbs to have in your life, however I felt like these were a great start. Yay!!

F:  What is your favorite green smoothie/juice combo?

L:  I think the basic frozen mango, spinach and banana (and water) smoothie is endlessly delicious.  Lately I’ve been using kale instead of spinach which is fine except that it doesn’t blend as well.

F:  What have you been using to wash and moisturize your face?

L:  I’ve been using First Aid Beauty’s cleanser and moisturizer. I think they are really solid products.  I had also been using a moisturizing oil sometimes at night but I ran out.  Occasionally, I’ll use coconut oil.

F:  How was the Taking It Offline event? Are you planning on having another one?

L:  It went well!  It was a great first group and I found it interesting to hear about the way people are connecting their online & offline lives.  We are hoping to host another one and will definitely post details about it soon.  Also, if anyone wants to join the mailing list, you can do that here.

F:  What is your favorite book and why?

L:  I’m not sure I have an answer to that question.  In the past I would have said The Unbearable Lightness of Being.  However, the older I get, the less I like it.  I’d say I haven’t yet read my favorite book.

F:  What do you do these days to pass the time on the subway?

L:  Apropos of your last question, I’ve actually started downloading books on my iPhone.  At first I wasn’t so into it and it lacks the sexiness of reading a physical book, but practically, it’s great.  Right now, along with everyone else I’m sure, I’m re-reading The Great Gatsby.

true_size_of_africa

Earlier in the week I went to a really interesting talk about Africa.  It was wonderful for many reasons, one of which includes the illustration that was shown (above) to convey the size of the African continent in relation to other – more familiar – places in the world.

I remember reaching the point in life in which I realized that my global education had been incredibly European-focused.  What that meant to me at the time was that ‘they’ had largely ignored teaching me about Asia.  While I wouldn’t say that I was completely clueless about Africa before this talk, it was still reminiscent of that first realization of how much I didn’t know.  It was also a strong reminder of how gratifying it is to take advantage of the resources that surround you, something I plan to do more of.
