The avocado tree outside of my office

The avocado tree outside of my office

L:  Hey! What’s up with you this week?

F:  Oh, hey!! This week has been busy at work. I had a crazy migraine yesterday which left me a bit bedridden. Today and Friday our office is being used for a bachelor party (believe it or not!) so my friends and I decided to work from Palm Springs! It’s so fun and spontaneous.

L:  Have you seen anything good online lately?

F:  I mean, it’s the internet! We are getting bombarded by data and images all day long. It is pretty rare that there is anything good. However, when I was trying to make a little special someone laugh recently, I stumbled upon this gem:

L:  What color nail polish did you get on your toes this week?

F:  When in doubt, I always go to the trusty Essie Shearling Darling.

L:  Do you ever think about getting a pet?

F:  We watched Oscar for around 3 weeks and a friend’s dog in-between. There were times when I thought I was excited to be dog-less. There were times that I loved having a dog. I guess the answer is that I do think about it. A lot.

L:  What is the hardest thing about surfing?

F:  Wow. I am not sure how I could pick. I think the hardest park is wiping out time and time and time and time again. It is completely exhausting. For me, it is very clear that guys have stronger upper body strength than women, so in a way I feel at a disadvantage. Those are the two hardest parts for me. It has motivated me to continue building my upper body strength “off the board.”

I think I told you before that I have been going to meditation on Monday nights at a Buddhist center. I have come to find this to be one of my favorite activities throughout the week. I am always eager to hear the topic of the day and excited to listen to whichever teacher speaks. The teacher tonight was the founder of Against the Stream, Noah Levine, and was my favorite so far. The theme was not so specific, but more general in asking why we meditate and what we can expect. It is an always welcome reminder to me not to stop meditating – to keep practicing every day. The reason that we all meditate is to help us cope, deal and detach from suffering. Most people are brought to this practice to lessen pain. For me, it has truly helped lessen a discomfort in life. It has given me a tool that gets me through in a smoother and more peaceful way. These reminders might seem redundant and simple, but they are usually the best ones. Just keep on keeping on with whatever you do to make yourself better. It’s subtle, but it’s working. Trust that.

Happy Monday! We hope you enjoy some summer fun today.  Here are this weeks pics:

Unexpected visit from my college roommate and lifelong friend. We hadn’t seen each other in seven or eight years and it was like not a day had gone by. Such a treat!

Living in California has really been a dream come true. I have become a hiker, a surfer, a 29 year old, a planner, a beach volleyball player, a paddleboarder, a party thrower and countless other things. California has given me sunshine, new friends, old friends, more family time (with Oscar!), more knowledge, more confidence – the list goes on. However, there are times when suddenly I am struck by homesickness. I am not just sick for my house that I grew up in – though that place is my paradise – but I am sick for:

Visiting my Suzie

Laughing with my cousins

Seeing my dad pull in the driveway

Kissing Kendall

Laying in bed with my Mom

Looking through my old room

Being at either of my grandma’s houses

Watching the lake change everyday

Walking down the street to the Zychowski’s.

The sound of the train passing when I am sleeping

There are so many other small things I miss tonight. So, yes, Los Angeles has been awesome. It has given me and Albert so many wonderful pieces of ourselves that we will have forever. However sometimes there are so many people that I miss at one time that I feel like I am drowning. Dorothy was right. There IS no place like home.

We hope you are all enjoying the last couple weeks of summer. Special shout out to one of our biggest fans – Kathy Cook. Happy Birthday, Kathy!! Here are this weeks photos:

The past couple of Monday nights, I have started to go to a Buddhist meditation center.  Every week they have a different teacher and topic that we discuss after mediation.

This week, there was a Buddhist monk who spoke. She was a really powerful teacher and there are a couple of things that I have thought about since:

The first is that your quality of life is a result of where you put your attention.

She also told us that the mind repeats 3 patterns:

  • There is something wrong – with me, with you, with the world, etc.
  • There is not enough – money, friendship, kindness, time, energy, etc
  • I need to be doing something – the dishes, becoming famous, make more money, etc

There have been a couple times this week where I have become aware of these patterns. I have also noticed how I seek out things that continue this pattern.

It’s definitely something worth being mindful of.

L: Do you have a five year plan?

F: No way!  I mean, I save money as much as I can. In that way, there is some financial planning.  Other than that, I have no plans.  Wanna schedule some time? I am wide open!

L: What’s the most fun thing you’ve done lately?

F: My first surf lesson was so fun.  It was hard, demanding, scary and fun.  It was the kind of fun where you fear for your life.  That’s the best kind!

L: How have you been motivating yourself lately to stick with morning yoga?

F: Lately, I have had two different adults tell me to never stop working out because once you do, it is harder to start.  That has been a big motivation.  If I feel this sore when I wake up now, how in the world will I feel as the years pass.  Another motivation is how amazing I feel after I stretch it out. I just feel alert, awake and ready for the day.  Oh and did I mention surfing?!

L: Are you reading, watching, listening to anything interesting?

F: Yes, yes, yes and yes!

I am reading my lovely friend Kaya’s proof copy of her novel The Karma Dairies. I am so deeply proud of my friend for writing such amazing stories. She has so much talent and so much to offer the world. These books will be in a store near you soon, trust me.

I am watching tons of surf movies. I just watched Surfwise last night. It is documentary of a man who raised all 9 of his kids to surf. It was interesting.

I am listening to Dirty Three. It is great to work to.

L: Do you like spending time by yourself?

F: I do like it. Honestly, I am rarely ever alone. I do like it though. I don’t exactly NEED it.

Documentaries are by far my favorite genre of movie. In the past couple of months, I have seen some that are worth noting.

180 Degrees South

This movie is inspiring and informative at the same time. This was what inspired Albert and I to start surfing.

Storm Surfers

This is a quick 4 episode series of two surfers who chase the swells of big storms in Australia. It’s pretty intense.

Tiny

This dude builds a tiny house himself and challenges us to think about our values and goals in life at the same time.

Anthony Bourdain – Parts Unknown

These episodes are totally addicting. They are for foodies, historians and anyone with a travel bug. Seeing Gaza was one of my favorite unknown parts.

112 Weddings

This documentary looks inside 112 marriages and how they are now compared to their wedding days. It’s pretty scary!

It’s been a while since my love affair with yoga took a pause. I used to practice almost every day for an hour and half. I ended up stopping because I didn’t see my body changing and I felt that I wanted a more upbeat workout. Well, I am back. I have been waking up every morning and unrolling my yoga mat. I don’t go crazy or anything. I just stretch. I get my body moving and I take a lot of deep breaths. Some mornings I can barely even get half way to touching my toes. Other times, I feel like a golden god(dess) doing poses left and right (no pun intended!). Bottom line – it feels so awesome to start your day that way. Try it out. Put a yoga mat next to your bed and first thing in the morning do a couple minutes of stretching and see how you feel.
