Late last week Dummy Magazine premiered this fabulous music video by our good friend Geoff Feinberg for Monster Rally’s Forager/Jungle Nights.  We are especially excited about this collaboration as it showcases incredibly sharp and intriguing footage that Geoff captured of the New York arm wrestling world (who even knew there was one?!) set to the sounds of two songs off our little brother’s latest LP Beyond the Sea.

Geoff tells Dummy Mag, This video came about almost coincidentally – I have been making a documentary (which I’m editing now) on a guy who happens to be a part of the whole arm wrestling scene over here in NYC, which has a small but loyal following. This guy hosts a weekly arm wrestling practice in the basement of his place in Queens, which he has been been doing for the past 15 years, so its a bit of an institution. There’s an open door policy, anybody from old timers to newbies show up and there are a lot of characters that end up coming through – great faces! While the doc I had been making is not really about arm wrestling, it plays a part. So, I had been filming a bunch of these practices and getting a load of footage, way more than I needed, but I couldn’t stop myself. It seemed pretty ripe for a music video (I really like documentary music videos and have had it in the back of my mind to do one for a while now).”

The latter part of the music video features the female champion of the Empire State Golden Arm Tournament, Joyce Boone.  Geoff goes on to say he, “liked the idea of doing a slightly more gritty music video, using heavier tracks [off Beyond the Sea]. I thought it would make a nice contrast – luckily Ted [Monster Rally] was totally open to this…I wanted everything to start off being super masculine and then subvert this towards at the end of the video where we see the women step up and have these intense arm wrestle battles.

We love it!  Read the complete interview with Geoff here.

So, I think I’ve taken a turn a bit on this trip.  I am yearning for some more meaningful experiences.

The “backpacker circuit” is wonderful and great, but I am also finding that it does not quite suit me. I think in some ways I am a bit too old to be considered the ideal Lonely Planet backpacker.  At first, the party places and the must-do’s seemed appealing.  However, as time has passed, they are not at all what I am looking for.  While in some ways, I am not even certain what I am looking for, I do know that I am craving more authentic ways to connect with the people in the places I am.  Maybe some retreats, classes and volunteering are in the near future.

In the mean time, I read this article on traveling on NPR and felt inspired.

I would love to hear any suggestions or tips you have on ways to deepen my experience and make it more meaningful. Please feel free to comment below or email me.

Hi.  We hope you had a good weekend.  We start off each week with a series of photos – usually sent to us by you. But this week we decided to post a few of our own pictures from our Instagram accounts.  We hope you enjoy them.

Farrell – Cambodia & Thailand

Lauren – New York City

Every week, as part of our One Word, Two Ways series, we pick a word and each base a post off that word.  This week, the word is Smile.

(Source unknown)

This used to be the background picture on my computer. I was going through a pretty hard time and looking for pick-me-ups wherever I could find them. I just can’t look at the grin on this man’s face without cracking up a little and immediately feeling my mood improve

I have noticed lately that I can sometimes be a jerk to strangers. I think it is a mixture of living in NYC and being tired of people hustling me.  On our trip, people are always staring at me and on a bad day, your Insecurities can really get the best of you.  At times, I find myself feeling defensive and glaring back.

But since arriving in Cambodia, I have taken a new approach which is making me infinitely happier.  I constantly smile.  At first it can feel like a cheesy thing, but it always leaves me genuinely smiling.  I have ended up talking to more people and having better days because of it.

Instead of ignoring people asking you if you want to buy something every second, just looking them in the eyes and smile.  Annie was right when she said, “You are never fully dressed without a smile.”  The days will feel brighter because you did.

After saying goodbye to Thailand, we have arrived safely in Cambodia. I can’t wait to tell you more about it but in the meantime, a few more things we have learned along the way:

~ No matter how much you prepare for something, it never goes as planned.

~ Always trust your instincts.

~ Don’t skimp on the neccessities.

~ Be honest with yourself about your weaknesses.

~ If you don’t like where you are, change it.

It’s almost Fashion Week in NYC which doesn’t mean a whole lot in my life aside from getting to spend some time with one of my best friends who comes into town for work and occasionally spotting groups of women in fabulous shoes.  However, I thought it would be a fun time to share these virtual tarot cards courtesy of Vogue Italia.

Hello.  We hope you had a wonderful long weekend.  Every week we gather some images to take a peek at what you have been doing and seeing.  Thanks to everyone who sent in pictures!

Jessica – Italy
I just got back from a trip to Italy with the family I nanny for.  This is the view from our villa in Radda, Tuscany

And in Venice…

and Rome.

Juanita – Huron, Ohio
Just off Route 2

Catherine – Upstate New York
Indian Ladder Farms, Altamont, NY – Macintosh apple harvest not looking so hot this year (mostly because of the “hot” February and March temperatures) but the orchards are still pretty and the cider is delicious.

Voorheesville, NY – My favorite corn field on the drive to my grandma’s house.  The owner lives next door in a shabby little house.  His land is worth millions but he’ll never sell it because he loves it.  Isn’t that wonderful?

Again in Voorheesville, NY – Tree climbing at my grandma’s.  She’s got this beautiful birch tree with this nasty tree scar (trees have feelings too!).

Lake George, NY – 4 p.m. sunlight glimmer.

David – Cleveland, Ohio
Watching trick flying at the Cleveland Air Show from Lake Erie.

We pick a word each week and both base a post off that word.  Check out the whole series here.  This week’s word is Refresh.

There is an unspeakable freedom about being on a trip like this.  Any moment when you want a change, you can just refresh.  It feels like those old view master cameras where you change the image by pulling the lever.   If you don’t like where you are, change it.  It is a lesson that I hope stays with me forever.

Yesterday I read somewhere that if you use boiling water to make ice cubes they will turn out clear, absent of the cloudiness that most ice has. While I can’t say I’ve ever been particularly aware of, or have ever even cared about the cloudiness of ice cubes, I found this to be an interesting tit bit nonetheless. All this thinking about ice got me to thinking about how refreshing infused ice cubes could make an otherwise pedestrian beverage. Luckily for all of us, Pinterest is unsurprisingly full of beautiful images for inspiration. I think I’m going to give it a try.
