When I was a senior in college I lived with my friends in a house that had a street-facing balcony. Our house was in the same part of town as most of the bars; when they let out, a lot of people walked by on their way home. One night we were on our balcony when one of my best friends suggested that we yell compliments to the people passing below us. We complimented people on their looks, their gaits, their seemingly kind dispositions. It was all pretty random but incredibly fun.

Just around New Years I came across this TED talk by Gala Darling.  In the talk, she suggests writing down every compliment you receive.  Though I haven’t followed through with the idea, I did mention it to a few friends and since then there have been a few occasions in which I’ve really recognized the power of a compliment.  Whether giving or receiving, you really can’t underestimate how good a compliment can make you feel.  Don’t hold back.

It is about to get real real in here!  Today, we have a perfect mix for your wintery weekend brought to you by our amazing friend, Dave.  I am pretty excited about this one because I have always liked Dave’s playlists and this one was made especially for us at Sister Disco.  So, enjoy the tunes, people.

And this is where they stayed, occasionally tilting their heads and necks to measure the other’s steadiness. Eventually they’d fly, but it didn’t seem that they were in any hurry. They were so similar that only their slightest differences set them apart. You got the sense they knew each other well.

Birds have a living stillness that is so particular.  Individually, they embody the freedom of one.  In twos, they aline in synchronicity.  And in a flock, they fly naturally along with the other birds.

“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”  Tweet, tweet.

I came across these pictures of our mom the other day and I just can’t stop looking at them!  I am thinking they were taken in the early 70s.  What I really love the most about the photos, besides the subject herself, is that the images are almost timeless. The lighting and the quality look as if they could have been taken today. I just love them!

Hey, hey, hay! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. It is a bit gloomy here in Cleveland and I have been dreaming of the feeling of sunshine on my face. Hope you are all taking your seasonal vitamin d. It works wonders! Here are this weeks pictures:

Last winter, I was feeling pretty miserable and kind of stuck. I know myself well enough now to know that winters are hard for me. The lack of sunlight and warmth does not equal sanity for me 🙂 During that time, someone mentioned to me that we are not meant to do go through life alone. There are so many times when we are feeling out of sorts, unbalanced, sad or overwhelmed when we just try and deal by ourselves. Ever since I heard this piece of advice, I have put it next to my bed. This always reminds me to ask for help, spend time with others and let others into my life, especially when I am feeling off.

Allen Ginsberg has been my jam ever since I can remember. This poem in particular has been taped to my bedroom wall in every place I have lived since college. It wasn’t until today that I realized I was missing it and thought I would share with you my most favorite poem.

Song

The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction

the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.

Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human–
looks out of the heart
burning with purity–
for the burden of life
is love,

but we carry the weight
wearily,
and so must rest
in the arms of love
at last,
must rest in the arms
of love.

No rest
without love,
no sleep
without dreams
of love–
be mad or chill
obsessed with angels
or machines,
the final wish
is love
–cannot be bitter,
cannot deny,
cannot withhold
if denied:

the weight is too heavy

–must give
for no return
as thought
is given
in solitude
in all the excellence
of its excess.

The warm bodies
shine together
in the darkness,
the hand moves
to the center
of the flesh,
the skin trembles
in happiness
and the soul comes
joyful to the eye–

yes, yes,
that’s what
I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.
