I love looking at mood boards.  They make me want quit my job and spend my days designing spaces.  I also just can’t get enough of the song Heavy Mood by Tilly and the Wall.  I’ve posted it before but in case you missed it, click through and do a little dance.  You won’t be sorry.

When I was a senior in college I lived with my friends in a house that had a street-facing balcony. Our house was in the same part of town as most of the bars; when they let out, a lot of people walked by on their way home. One night we were on our balcony when one of my best friends suggested that we yell compliments to the people passing below us. We complimented people on their looks, their gaits, their seemingly kind dispositions. It was all pretty random but incredibly fun.

Just around New Years I came across this TED talk by Gala Darling.  In the talk, she suggests writing down every compliment you receive.  Though I haven’t followed through with the idea, I did mention it to a few friends and since then there have been a few occasions in which I’ve really recognized the power of a compliment.  Whether giving or receiving, you really can’t underestimate how good a compliment can make you feel.  Don’t hold back.

Last winter, I was feeling pretty miserable and kind of stuck. I know myself well enough now to know that winters are hard for me. The lack of sunlight and warmth does not equal sanity for me 🙂 During that time, someone mentioned to me that we are not meant to do go through life alone. There are so many times when we are feeling out of sorts, unbalanced, sad or overwhelmed when we just try and deal by ourselves. Ever since I heard this piece of advice, I have put it next to my bed. This always reminds me to ask for help, spend time with others and let others into my life, especially when I am feeling off.

Since I have been away from America for some time now, I have been thinking a lot about freedom and what it means to be free. These are things I think are worth pondering. What does it really mean to be free? As an individual, as a citizen and in a spiritual sense?  I am not completely sure what the answer is, but I know I wouldn’t be anywhere close to the person I am today without the freedom to express myself.

Here is an amazing little diddy to enjoy while you think about what it means to be free 🙂

I must admit there is something about “the holiday season” that makes me uncomfortable.  Before you freak out, hear me out.  Of course the idea of hot chocolate, ice skating, cookie making and snowflakes fills my heart with cinnamony love; yet, the consumerism makes me feel yucky. To top it off, I want to give everyone the best present they have ever received, then in the end I choke and don’t give anything at all. So Christmastime sends me into a bit of a silent panic. The year however, my family has decided to only give each other gifts that we have made or found (my mom added that, which scares me).  This makes me feel like we are getting closer to real reason for Christmas and I like it.

One morning earlier this week I re-listened to the A Very Special Sedaris Christmas episode on This American Life.  I’d seen it sitting there in my iTunes many times over the past year but the time to listen again never seemed right, for obvious reasons and all.  My favorite part is when he talks about the list he keeps of every present he receives each year, and how much he thinks it cost, so he can match it the next year.  It also made me want to revisit his Holidays On Ice, which I read a few years ago.  If you haven’t check either of these out, ’tis the season.

Lost-in-Translation-1

Lost in Translation is truly one of my favorites.  It’s one of a few movies I can watch over and over and still continue to find so satisfying.  When we picked the word Understanding for this week, I couldn’t stop hearing Bill Murry’s voice in my head singing “What’s so funny ’bout peace, love and understanding” in the karaoke scene. The video quality here isn’t the best but you get the jist.

P.S. Did you see the NYTimes interview with Billy Murray earlier this week? Read it here.

When I went to Israel, I became somewhat obsessed with the conflict there. I would talk to anyone who would talk to me openly about their experience and perspective. Due to its many layers and years, the conflict between Israel and Palestine is known for its complexity. While I was there, my cousin recommended that I read the book The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East.  If you have any interest, I strongly recommend this book as well.  It has given me a broader understanding of both sides of this ongoing and ever present conflict.

For the past few days I have been thinking about my blog life.  I don’t think it was ever our (the sisters disco) intention to have a blog diary.  In fact, I don’t think Lauren and I ever intended for our blog to be very personal. We wanted this to be a place of inspiration for each other and anyone else who was interested. For our love of each other, maybe more than for the love of the blog, I have been posting throughout our trip. Maybe it’s because we are about to return home or because we have reached gloomy weather, but I feel like a bit of an ass. Who am I to post these posts? Who even wants to read about me? Are they judging me? I am just asking for judgement. As I type this though, I am realizing that I am projecting all my own insecurities onto you, the reader. I guess I am just asking for silent support because I feel like the transition home might be hard and I’ll need a smile or two from you, whoever you are.

Guys, big news over here. I got a new camera. I’ve never had a nice camera nor been exposed to even the basics of photography. I am so excited to start playing with it & can’t wait to use more of my own photos for upcoming posts.

i carry your heart with me

by E.E. Cummings
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)

i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

Ode to Truth & Courage

We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us
so that we become increasingly resentful and afraid,
or we can let them soften us, and make us kinder.
We always have the choice.

I had the wonderful opportunity of swimming in the infamous Dead Sea.  It was an indescribable experience.  After the wonderful feeling of weightlessness, I wanted to look into all the trace elements and minerals in the Dead Sea.  I learned a lot about the extraordinary healing properties of swimming in salt water.
