I first became aware of Kate Singleton of Art Hound and Buy Some Damn Art, when she featured the incredible work of our fabulous friend, and homie, Austin Power.  Kate is a self-proclaimed art nerd whose sites are dedicated to making great art accessible and affordable.  I am a huge admirer of her efforts and am psyched to introduce you to her through the post below which she put together for our viewing pleasure.  Thanks, Kate!  And when you’re finished enjoying the work, go Buy Some Damn Art.

I thought it would be fun to feature art that’s perhaps a little out of the scope of Art Hound for a change. One theme I’ve seen crop up a lot lately is this minimalism meets 80’s glam hybrid. The emphasis is on playing with materials and juxtaposing unexpected elements. The cuff by FAUX/Real is something I’ve been sort of obsessed with lately. The concept of neoprene jewelry is totally wacky and delightful. All of these pieces are at once restrained and extravagant which is what appeals to me most.

I’ve been studying the principles of manifestation for the past few months and listening to a lot of talks by teachers of the subject.  Of all the different things that go into the practice of manifesting your desires, this one has really made an impact on me.

The idea removes the waiting, wishing and wanting so we can live an experience even before an accompanying situation comes around.  The Law of Attraction then kicks in, and you find yourself having more of whatever it is you desire.  There are a lot of things that enable this practice but two are really standing out to me now.

One:  It’s unlikely the desired experience or feeling includes space for self-criticism/hatred/doubt/etc., so that has to be dismissed as often as arises.

Two:  It also seems unlikely the desire includes desperate, controlling or manipulative energy so total surrender, and release of attachment to a particular outcome, is also necessary.

It all make so much sense to me; though, the actual application of the ideas are definitely a work in progress.  I’ll keep you posted.

Starting off the week, once again, with a round of pictures courtesy of you guys (and one of my own).  Hope this week brings you all everything you desire.

Every week we pick a word and each do a post based on that word. This week: Play.

Playing in my ears all week has been MTMTMK, the newest album by The Very Best (a Swedish-Malawian duo).  The album is upbeat and danceable.  I hope it sets the tone for an amazing weekend!  Enjoy.

On our trip,  we have had some downtime and have started playing cards.  At first, the only game for two people Albert and I could remember is the game War.  Since then, we have been playing a bit of other random games we remember from being kids.

If anyone knows some good card games for 2, 3 or 4 players, send me a link. We are always eager for more games!

When I went to Montreal over Memorial Day weekend and to Amsterdam last fall, I rented out my apartment on Airbnb.com.  On both trips, my friends and I stayed in Airbnb apartments.  Clearly, I’m a fan.

One of the services offered by the site is to have your home professionally photographed.  So a few weeks ago, a photographer stopped by and snapped a few shots of my apartment.  I just got the pictures back and by way of a little (literally) home tour, I thought I’d invite you in.

Despite always wanting to change certain details, I think the pictures turned out great. Check out the photographer’s professional site here. He’s really talented.

I first discovered Smart People Podcasthosted by Chris Stemp and Jon Rojas when our cousin, Juani, talked about the episode with Brené Brown in her Homie of the Day post back in February.  I have been 100% hooked ever since.

These guys have close to sixty episodes interviewing smart people from all over the map and cover an incredible array of topics in a super friendly and approachable way.  Some of my recent favorites include conversations with nutritionist Debra Benfield on mindful nutrition, historian and author Craig Koslofsky on “the history of the night, and former director of astrophysics at NASA Charles Pellerin on his experiences with the Hubble Space Telescope.

We’re super grateful and excited to share with you today an exclusive interview (download here or listen below) that Chris and Jon conducted for Sister Disco telling us a little about how the podcast came to be and what they’ve learned along the way.  (We’re also cracking up at the shout out on the left white board in this picture.)

I often listen to BBC World News in the morning.  Yesterday I heard a piece on a Swiss finishing school that teaches “international protocol and etiquette.”  My ears perked up when I heard mention of etiquette rules for cheese consumption (one of my all-time favorites).

Did you know that hard cheese should not be eaten with bread (and is most appropriately eaten with fork and knife)?  Apparently, if you’re aspiring to international standards, only soft cheese may be eaten on bread – with the exception of mozzarella cheese.  Though considered a soft cheese, mozzarella should also be eaten with knife and fork.

A few years ago I received a lovely set of cheese knives, which came with this handy guide.

A few additional pieces of protocol for you:

Every piece of cheese should include the rind, in order to experience its full flavor.  Lastly, and most important, it is apparently very bad form to ever cut the nose or tip off cheese, as it is considered to be the best part.  Fair enough, I suppose.  However, when it comes to the bread pairings, I’m happy to know the rules but can’t say I’ll be following them!

We’re starting this week off with a special congratulations to our brother, Teddy, and his fiancee, Kelley!  So happy for you guys!!
