I have never been a morning person and the thought of coffee has for many years been my biggest motivator for getting out of bed.  At the suggestion of the holistic practitioner I saw last week, I have been drinking a glass of water with a half of lemon every morning.  I can’t believe how much I look forward to this simple drink.  It is so refreshing and hydrating, which has been especially appreciated on these hot, muggy June mornings.

I am a morning person. Always have been. Although I don’t always wake up whistling or dancing, I achieve a lot of things in the morning. One important part of my life is my morning routine. Nothing keeps you on your life path like a solid morning routine. It goes a little something like this.

Hot Lemon Water

Time to chill

Meditate

Smoothie

These are the things that start my body, my mind and my day on the right track. I just love my morning times!

Happy Friday friends!

Last week’s SUPERMOON.

Though I am pretty busy with work and adapting to a new and ever changing schedule these days, some things have peaked my interest this week.

1. I have been exchanging favorite Ted Talks with a co-worker. Here is his favorite one.

2. I watched the documentaries Love, Marilyn (somewhat cheesy) and Pussy Riot through HBOgo and both left impressions on me.

3. I am loving this smoothie.

4. I listen to Here’s The Thing, a podcast hosted by Alec Baldwin, every morning. He interviews some really interesting people that are clearly already comfortable around him.

5. Billy Joel is awesome and always will be.

F: What is your favorite part about the heat?

L: The feeling of warmth.  I also just really love nights when you’re with the people you love and it’s too hot to do anything but lay around and talk to each other.

F. What is your favorite summer treat? Food and drink?

L:  Probably ice cream.  Not frozen yogurt, not gelato, not Pinkberry.  I’m talking real, American ice cream.  It’s more difficult than you’d think to find in NYC.  A Dairy Queen blizzard works too.

F. Are there any movies that you are interested in seeing?

L: Yes!  I want to see “The Kings of Summer.”

F. If you were to become an artist, what medium would you express yourself through?

L:  This is my most difficult question.  I guess I’d say every medium to which I have access.  Except song, I’m a terrible singer.

F. What is your favorite picture of yourself? Post it girl.

L:  I don’t know about all-time favorite but this is a picture of me straight off the playa at Burning Man.  I had had the most amazing week and felt perhaps the best I ever have in my life.  I can’t believe it was five years ago and that I haven’t made it back since.  It also reminds me of the POP Up Shop: Burning Man Style Prep post I did last summer.  All so fun!

I never thought I would actually LIVE in California. Being from Cleveland, it is quite a move. I was pretty unsure of it before we left, however it has really been such a treat to be here. The best part about living in California are the options. There are so many places to see. There are parts of this state that you wouldn’t even believe are the same country. Whether it is driving the cliffs of Big Sur or beating the heat in the desert, I always feel lucky to be here.

The other day when I was driving up to Ojai after paddle boarding with my co-workers in Malibu, I couldn’t help but say out loud “I love my life.” It wasn’t a loud exclaimation, but a small, soft fact.

Thanks, California – for being so beautiful.

Last week, my friend Kate (who I first met when I reached out to her to see if she’d like to be a Homie of the Day here) and I hosted our second Taking It Offline event.  Taking It Offline is an ongoing event series for women in NYC who are pursuing (or considering) their personal, creative or professional passions online. It was a wonderful evening and so nice to talk with a number of creative and inspiring ladies doing a range of things in the online arena.  From arts businesses to fashion design to fitness blogging for the working professional to online marketing strategy and freelance writing (there was even another joint sister blogger!), these ladies were awesome.  I’m already looking forward to our next event.

If you or anyone you know would like to join us next time, sign up for our mailing list here.  Taking It Offline is also on Facebook and Twitter.

Hey ya’ll! Hope you all had a great weekend. I spent some time in Ojai with family friends and had a lovely time. Here are this weeks pics:

Those who know me, know that I am a huge fan of sleeping. I went to this fantastic holistic practitioner earlier this week and ever since I have been feeling incredibly in-tune with what my body is asking me for. Sleep/rest/slowing down are definitely up there!  For any of you who live in New York, I would love to tell you more about this woman/experience.  It was super powerful and I would recommend her to anyone.

I gotta say – life is pretty fantastic right now. I am loving LA. I just got a new job that I love. My little brother and his fiance live down the street. I am healthy. There are so many things and people to celebrate. I am safe. All areas in my life are covered and full of positivity. I just wanted to take a moment and acknowledge that things are pretty fantastic right now.

Smoothies have lately become part of my every day life. I have been having one in the morning and sometimes, if I am not that hungry at night, I have one for dinner. Here are my 2 favorites lately.

When I was about 17, my boyfriend introduced me to the saying “six of one, half a dozen of the other.” For some reason I could never quite wrap my head around this phrase. Six to one and a half a dozen to the other? Six and one and a half of a dozen the other? It just doesn’t really make sense to me; even now I had to google the saying to get it right. Bottom line, I’m told it basically means two things are the same, interchangeable. But in my mind it continues to have some meaning related to being half of a whole, like in the way June is six months into the year. Anyway, this year I’ve been listening to music a little differently than I have in the past. Each month (minus March), I’ve created a new spotify playlist and just dumped any music I’m currently listening to into it. As we’re now at the six to one marker, I thought I’d compile all the songs into one playlist. Here it is.

L. What’s your favorite item in your closet?

F. That is seriously too hard of a question. The first thing that comes to my mind is this long dress that I got from the maternity section at Target. It is the best fabric, the cutest pattern and has an amazing shape. I wear it around the house all the time. Don’t hate.

L. What do you keep on your nightstand?

F:  At the moment, a plant. I am still waiting for my table that I won on designlovefest to arrive. When it does arrive, I will put on it my buddha, my journal and the book I am reading.

L. What are you currently reading?

F:  I am currently reading Clean Gut and The Practice at the same time. However, I just saw at the airport that Jeanette Walls has a new book out. I am going to get it as an audiobook for my commute.

L. What’s one of your guilty pleasures?

F:  Blah, The Real Housewives of anything.

L. Want to give me an easy recipe I can make for myself?

F:  You know I share all my favorite recipes with you. However, summer is here and you are a woman on the go. I would recommend making yourself a big batch of gazpacho. It is the best thing ever and so simple. It gets better as the days go on!
