Each week we pick a word and both base a post off that word. This week’s word is Eager.

I’ve said it before but I am someone who reads in streaks. This could be turned around to say that sometimes I fall away from reading – almost completely. I’m not exactly sure how it happens but occasionally, when I find myself without a next read, it can take me months before I read another book. But when I do get back into the habit…AH! It feels so good. SO good. Like I almost can’t believe the vastness of insight, intrigue and information that is available to each of us at all times.

And man, I am excited to say, I’m back! I suddenly have a pile of books that I’m so eager to dive into. Though I don’t usually read more than one book at a time, I have already started three of them. It’s going to be a good Fall.

Welp, I am ready! Come out, come out wherever you are.

As I told you a little bit on Saturday, I have been digesting a lot of the thoughts and ideas that were presented at the Hay House event I went to the weekend before last. One of the presentations that keeps playing in my mind was the talk by New York Times best-selling author, Gregg Braden, about his book Deep Truth. He discussed the disproved scientific facts that are still being taught in our public schools, such as humans having been found not to have evolved from Neanderthals, and history of man going back thousands of years before what we learned as children. It’s a lot to think about.

There are a couple of apps we have used religiously since we have been on our trip that I wanted to share with you.

It makes me sad to say it, but Kayak is not at all as good as Skyscanner. Skyscanner is perfect for us because you can, let’s say, search for flights for prices from “Turkey to Everywhere” to check prices to destinations all over the world.
*
This app has pictures that customers take while they are eating at a certain place place. It has been great turning us onto local night markets and food stalls. I love it.
*
XE is a currency exchange app that we end up checking almost everywhere we go.
*
When we first started our trip, wireless was sparse. I guess in some ways it still is, but through Instagram we can stay connected by just a picture. I am @serrellio.
I was recently at an event with other Airbnb hosts from the New York City community and had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Loni. In addition to hosting travelers in her home in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Dr. Loni has begun holding a monthly fish fry in her back yard. She came up with the idea after a number of her guests expressed an interest in having more authentic, in-home experiences while visiting New York City. Though the fish fry events are mainly set up for travelers, they are open to anyone looking to make real, community-building connections.
I immediately loved the spirit behind Dr. Loni’s concept and, though I was out of town and unable to attend myself, I asked Dr. Loni if she would give us a recap of the inaugural Fish Fry. It seems that karma had a good amount to do with the success of the evening, which we so enjoyed reading about! Thanks, Dr. Loni, for sharing it with us!

Well Karma was out and about last weekend and boy did she have a blast at the first FISH FRY FRIDAY at Dr. Loni’s Place. Dr. Loni told folks that the party was actually all because of her and that just tickled her pink!
Although the fish and chips received some really good reviews, demonstrated by empty plates, the best part was the amazing folks that showed up. Karma pulled in childhood friends, family, folks she met on the bus, coders, artists, other Airbnb hosts, inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs – all who were happy to sit in the garden and bounce the positive vibe back and forth.
The next event is Friday, October 5th – rain or shine – and Karma will be there with bells on.

A little run down of five things I’m feeling pretty into at the moment:
1. This necklace. I enjoy looking at it. Maybe at some point I’ll also enjoy wearing it.
*
2. This Newspaper Blackout Horoscope. Every month Austin Kleon does these blackout horoscopes. They’re so fun to read. This is mine for September. Read yours here.
3. This book. I’m only at the beginning but this collection of letters written by anonymous people to online advice columnist, Sugar, fill me with so much emotion I can almost only read a few in a single sitting. “Sugar” (or Cheryl Strayed) responds to each with so much care, injecting tales of Sugar’s life along the way. I’ll let you know my final summation when I’ve finished but this book has made a huge impact in its first 100 pages.

4. This thank you note. Leah Dieterich writes a thank you letter a day. This one cracks me up because I relate to it so well.
5. This song. Really loud!
Hey, friends. We like to start off the week with a round of photos from our friends and family to see what people have been up to. Thanks to Erin, Juani, Austin and Sash for these!

I “pinned” this illustration from The Human Body: What It Is and How It Works months ago and have been waiting for the right time to use it. Last weekend I went with my mom to a Mind, Body and Soul retreat where I attended talks given by leading authors and experts in the broadly defined field of consciousness. I have been wanting to write more about what I heard and learned there but, to be honest, so many concepts and ideas were shared with me that I haven’t known quite where to start.

(via brain pickings)
A lot of the talks related to the premise that we are not separate from the universe or from each other. I like the similarity that this idea has to the various body systems. Yes, each one is different and has it’s own purpose but ultimately the are integrated parts working in cooperation to operate our bodies.
Have you seen “Beasts of the Souther Wild”? If not, do! It is so beautiful and in its ways speaks to this same notion.
I could write a letter to shoes expressing how much I miss them and love them. I have three pairs of shoes with me on this trip – a pair of whack flip flops, some dirty Toms and a pair of hiking boots. Sometimes, I just Google Image “shoes” to see all the different kinds and options.
Here are a few of my favorite looks:
I cannot wait until I am reunited with my shoes upon my return home!
