I was driving home yesterday listening to an On Being podcast (recommended by Lauren) about poetry. It was the first time in a while that I remembered that I love poetry. I always have. It is not something I really ever talked to anyone about or made that big of a deal. I used to write poems for years and years – up until the end of college. Listening to Sarah Kay’s passion for spoken word inspired me to start writing again; mostly because I realized it was one of the only things in my life that I shared only with myself.

Check out her Ted Talk:

F: Do you have any goals that you want to accomplish by the end of the year?

L:  I do but you know that old saying, don’t bite the hand that feeds you…

F: Are you going to keep your bangs?

L:  I think I’m going to keep with them for awhile.  Also the process of growing them out seems rough.  I feel like I’ll break down and cut them many times even when I think I want to grow them out.

F: What is the most fun thing you have done in the past week?

L:  I had a pretty great night last week here:

F: What is your favorite fall activity?

L:  Remember when we got really into Friday Night Lights and played football on my birthday?  Who knew we had it in us but that was some good fall activity.

Sometimes I miss the Taylors.

F: What is your favorite restaurant in NYC?

L:  That’s such a hard question.  Definitely not my favorite restaurant because I care as much, if not more, about atmosphere as I do about the food but I just had phenomenal sushi at this very unassuming place called Hana Sushi in Chelsea.  We’ll go there next time you’re here.

Do you ever feel disconnected from yourself?

Lately I have been. Dare I say that I miss my days of unemployment, searching for any words of wisdom that grabbed my attention, like graffiti on the street or a message in an email. I used to spend hours meditating and doing yoga. It was such a quiet and reflective time. When I look back, I realize that it is true, you do your most growing during the hardest times in your life.  It can be challenging to stay connected to yourself when your life starts to pick up and you are in a groove.

Sometimes you need to remind yourself to slow down – catch up with yourself.

Stop in and say hello.

7fbef14079f8a8f0aef10d9b985e2a89I’ve had these sad songs in my head for the last couple of days.  I feel almost too superstitious to write this but it’s good times in life when sad songs aren’t sounding personal to you but rather pretty sweet. Hope it’s the same for you.

“Be conscious of how to use your feelings and to what level you are letting them dictate your path in Life. Don’t criticize or judge them.” – Dr. Keith Jordan, The Practice

I have a very specific vision for the piece of art I’d like to find and hang above my couch.  Basically, I’m looking for a calming beach or water photograph with somewhat faded colors.  I’ve been surfing (tee hee) around the web looking and while none of these are exactly it, they all convey they feeling I’m looking to capture.

As is fairly evident by the number of times I’ve brought it up in the past few weeks, my new apartment arrangement is pretty much the most exciting thing going on in my life lately. After over seven years of living here, I’m really enjoying the new uses of my little space. I’ve also been using the room swap as an impetus to declutter and reorganize. And once I’m done with that, I have a smudge stick ready and waiting to perform a little energetic clearing as well. This will be my maiden smudging but the timing feels right. If you’re not familiar with smudging, there’s a nice explanation of it here.  Or to say it otherwise:

…keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.

L:  What are your 3 favorite things in your kitchen?

F:  Oh boy, well first and foremost my VitaMix. I would be lost without it.  Secondly, I love my mini-tumblers made by Meghan Lunne.  They are perfect for sippin’.  And last but not least, I love my juicer. It might be getting dusty, but I still love you juicer!

L:  Are you still running a lot? How’s that going?

F:  Albert and I have been running around the Silverlake reservoir once or twice a week.  It is a nice way to spend time together after work. I am getting so much better. I can ALMOST run the 2.2 miles.

L:  What’s something you want to do within the next year?

F:  In the next year, I would like to be more creative and have more creative projects. I’ll let you know how that pans out.

L:  What’s the best/your favorite costume you’ve ever worn?

F:  This was fun:
