My morning commute

My morning commute

L:  What did you have for dinner last night?

F:  Funny you should ask because my dinner last night was fantastic. Albert (Master Chef Silverlake) made me lemon and garlic mahi-mahi, sauteed brussel sprouts in a white wine sauce and a green salad with homemade dressing. The whole meal was phenomenal.

L:  How did you like the Zumba class you went to last week?
F:  Zumba, zumba, zumba. This was my second time around and it was ok. It is a full hour of dancing. It is actually pretty fun, but there is something about me that can’t take it seriously. I want to dance around and do my own moves and laugh. That’s pretty much what I do anyways. We are all going again this week, so I will keep you posted.

L:  What curly hair products are you using lately?
F:  I am still using Deva AnGel. I have never found a product that has made my hair look better. That being said, I would like to change products as this one dries out my hair too much. It was fine in NYC, but in LA the air is so much dryer.

L:  What app on your phone do you use the most?
F:  I am so disgusted by my Instagram habit. I was going to call it an addiction, but that is not what it is. It is simply a habit. A nervous tick. Instagram is my most used and then Waze, which is an app to get you places the fastest way possible. It’s the best in LA.

L:  If you could go to one place for six-weeks, where would you go?
F:  Ah! There is no ONE place. My first instinct is to tell you Hawaii. If it was 6 weeks, I would want to be somewhere where the food is fresh. I would also love to go back to Turkey for a while. Cuba has been my primary focus lately. I will go there.

I probably don’t need to tell you that we’ve been facing some cold days of late in NYC.  For me this season usually goes hand in hand with dry, itchy, red, flaky skin.  The combination of cold wind and dry heat from the space heaters that warm my apartment are my sensitive skin’s worst nightmare.  However, with significant trial and error, I seem to have found a skin care regime that’s really working for me these days.  So, if you’re in the market for some moisture, these are my suggestions:

winter skin

ShiKai Borage Therapy Dry Skin – This body lotion is the real deal. I don’t know much about the borage plant (you can read about it here) but it works wonders. I seriously love this lotion and have never used a better one. I buy mine at Whole Foods.

Jojoba and Coconut Oil – I use coconut oil mainly to take off make-up and sometimes as a face moisturizer.  I use jojoba oil right out of the shower on my face and body (under my lotion, so to speak).  I also use it as a facial moisturizer when I first wake up and after I wash my face, before applying the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – I first bought this facial moisturizer on a desperate winter day walking around the city with Farrell.  The skin on my face was so dry it hurt!  I can’t tell you how great it is.  The cream is so hydrating without being at all oily.  I also use this brand’s face wash, however after reading this blog post, I’m looking forward to replacing it with raw honey once I run out.

NUXE Reve de Miel – Honey Lip Balm – Simply the best.  And I’ve tried many, a many lip balm.

I have been meaning to watch this video that my mom sent me for a while. This morning, I finally did. I was pleasantly surprised that it was Brene Brown’s voice. I just love everything that she says. I felt so touched by this video because I have experienced both of these scenarios in the past couple of weeks. Sometimes not know what to say is the best thing to say.

Thanks for the reminder, Mom, and I am sorry for being the fox guy every once in a while (you know who you are).

Happy Monday everybody! It is going to be a great week. Here are this weekend’s pictures!

I have been noticing a lot of things on my walks around my neighborhood.

There is a mother sitting with her arm around her son.  She’s tapping a beat with her hand and her feet, while he’s absorbed in his video game.  One seat away is a pretty girl with long hair, reading a hard cover book.  I can’t tell if she’s with the guy sitting next to her.  They look like they go together but they aren’t really interacting so it’s hard to say.  From the end of the car comes an overpowering conversation in Spanish.  The volume makes me think it’s a fight but, in fact, it may just be a topic of passion.  Another young girl is knitting; a first timer with instructions on her lap.  Everyone else has headphones in their ears or is playing on their phone, minus the newest passenger with the orange scarf and orange hat, and the guy reading David Sedaris’ Naked at the end of the row seat. The energy is calm and people’s movement and speed convey that it’s a Saturday.  To my right a woman dressed like a urban outdoorsmen opens and refolds her New York Times.  We arrive at Delancey Street; I exit and walk toward the sounds of station performers singing out, “…people all over the world, join hands, start a love train, love train…”

January is a month so many of us are working to set healthy routines and practices in various areas of our lives.  This is apparent not only in my own daily life but in my email inbox as well.  Lately, many newsletters to which I subscribe have been sprinkling a range of healthy tips and inspirational messages my way so I thought I’d share a few of the ones I’ve found most helpful with you.  Cheers to a happy and healthy weekend!

1) Skin Brushing (via Clean)

“Use a stiff bristled dry skin brush and spend a few minutes brushing your body in an upward, circular motion before your morning or evening shower. Skin brushing stimulates the lymphatic and circulatory systems, helping you to release and eliminate more toxins. It also makes your skin soft and invigorates the whole body.”

4) Mindfulness reminder from Dad:

Most of the time we are occupied with our own thoughts–thinking about what has happened in the past or imagining what might happen in the future.  Many of us live most of our lives on autopilot. Through mindfulness we develop the capacity to become more aware of what is happening in our lives as they are unfolding.  And we do this without coloring it with our judgments, fears, hopes, or fantasies.

By reducing distractions, mindfulness helps us focus our attention, enabling us to directly experience what is happening right here, right now.

After all, nothing ever happens in the past or the future.  “Now” is the only time where our lives unfold.  The only moment when we are alive.

One of my goals for this year is to listen to more music around the house. This new pact to myself has brought up so many songs I used to love. I put together a playlist of songs that I love, have loved or have fallen in love to.  Just imagine that I dropped a mix tape into your backpack after school.

F: How is your cleanse going?

L:  I think I’m pretty obsessed with the whole thing, to be honest.  I’m on Day 8 of following this cleanse diet for lunch and having Clean smoothies for breakfast and dinner.  Overall, I think it’s going well.  I think about it all day long and am somewhat amazed that I’m really doing it.  I feel good.

F: What have you learned about yourself in the month of January?

L:  I can do it!  Haha.  Kidding.  Kind of.

F: Who is YOUR favorite artist?

L:  Nearly impossible question, I admit.  I’ve always loved this mural by Julie Mehretu that I read about in The New Yorker but I don’t know any of her other work.

F:  What is your preferred form of exercise and are you doing it?

L:  Yoga is the only type of “exercise” I’ve ever done consistently, though not so much recently.  In the last couple of years I’ve realized that I really like hiking but it’s not something I have the opportunity to do very often.

F:  What are you reading? Listening to?

L:  I’m still slowly reading these two books and am now also reading Clean.  I need to commit to one and start wrapping then up.  I haven’t been listening to a ton of music this week though I have listened to the most recent James Blake album a few times.  It’s right for when it’s right.

I follow Steal Like an Artist author, Austin Kleon, on Instagram where he frequently uploads his newspaper blackout poetry.  Have you seen any of them?  Though I’ve yet to do it, I always think it would be fun to make some of my own.  Perhaps I will and then I can share it with you as original content 🙂
