L: How’s your first LA “June Gloom” going?

F: It has not been that gloomy on this side of town until the past couple of days. The weather has been beautiful and mild, otherwise. I guess all and all, it hasn’t effected me in the slightest. Not like when I made this playlist last year (which I still listen to all the time).

L: What are you reading right now?

F: Oh! I am reading The Goldfinch. I started it on Sunday and have been staying up way past my bedtime (til 11pm!) reading. I am just eating this book up. The first couple chapters grab you by the hand and pull you into the story. I recommend it and I haven’t even finished it. Also, it won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

L: What is a virtue you most value?

F: Sheesh…just going straight to it. You aren’t even going to buy me a drank first?!

I have to admit, I just googled the word virtue and it feels so stuffy. Like something people spoke about in the Middle Ages. But since you asked, I think courage is a virtue I admire greatly – the courage to be who you feel you are, the courage to change something in your life that makes you unhappy, the courage to be truthful. I like that virtue.

I also really appreciate people being compassionate instead of judgemental.

L: Do you have a happy song?

F: I was just thinking about how all the songs I listen to are a bit haunting lately. Sure, I have plenty of happy songs. It’s funny I don’t listen to them as much. How about this one:

p.s. This video was filmed at Burning Man or something like that.

L: What do you want to be when you grow up (also, I kinda hate when people say this)?

A Mom.

I went to a fundraiser event on Monday night and the DJ was playing the most fun, old school dance music.  There are few things I can think of that are better than an unexpected dance party & I didn’t know how badly I needed one until it happened the other night.  It made me think of when Farrell was doing her dance cardio workouts.  If it’s been awhile since you shaked your groove thing, might I suggest that you give it a go.  Even if it’s five minutes in your office with your door closed or at home while you’re doing the dishes, press play and loosen up!

After my friend mentioned that she watched Les Miserables this weekend, I have had songs from that glorious play in my head all day long. It reminded me how much I love showtunes. I know how lame the word showtunes sounds, but I guess that’s just what we call them. I grew up listening to “The Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber.” All my other siblings heard the same music, but for me it just stuck. I loved everything about Broadway musicals. Ever since then, those songs tear at my heart strings. I can feel every emotion in every song and also feel such a sense of nostalgia for my childhood.

Les Miserables – I Dreamed A Dream

Annie – Maybe

Rent – One Song Glory

Newsies – Seize The Day

A day at the beach – Bridgehampton, NY

One of our good friends, John Thomas aka RUMTUM, has put out a new EP YESOD that we have been blasting at our house. This EP is perfect for those summer days, laying around and catching up with friends. We listen to it at the beach and when we have friends over. I listen to it while I clean or take a shower.

John is one talented dude. For the whole album, check out his Bandcamp page.

F:  What are some restaurants that you have been to recently and liked?

L:  The other night I went to Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria.  It’s the second time I’ve been there and it is delicious.  Lately, I’ve also recently had really nice meals at Rye in Williamsburg and Madiba in Fort Greene.  They were both great but I particularly liked Madiba – the food was super good and the feeling in the restaurant was really cool.

F: Can you share with me some summer trends you are seeing on the street?

L:  I’ve always got my eye out for a good jumper and saw a great looking casual, yet polished one the other day.  Today is one of the hottest days yet, so not sure how long this’ll last, but lots of girls are still wearing low boots with their dresses.

F: What do you do when you are exhausted?

L:  Cancel plans and sleep as much as I can.

F: Have you starting planning your trip to Colombia in July?

L:  Yes, a bit!  Flight and accommodations are set; I’m feeling prepared.

F: Have you seen any good art lately?

L:  The art pictured above was being displayed on the outside of Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on my way home today.  It caught my eye and I ended up talking about it for a bit with this older woman who was also quite into it.  It was a nice New York experience.

I recently took a hormone test to see if I could get any leads on my headaches – but in turn I found out that I have adrenal fatigue. I am pretty sure it is something that most of us have just not everyone is getting tested for it.

Since I got the results back, I have started an adrenal protocol and been trying to take it easy.

Some treatments other than the supplements are:

  • Sleep/rest and nap more often
  • Eat a whole foods based diet
  • Knock out that caffeine addiction
  • Eat within the first hour I am awake and have a light snack before bed.
  • Oh, and laughing a lot.

Let’s be honest, this is not a very daunting set of tasks. I will say however that taking it easy, resting and admitting how freaking tired I am has proven to be challenging. I am trying my best.

If you think you might have adrenal fatigue or want more information on it, check out Dr. Mark Hyman’s site.
