Though I have never been, I LOVE Coachella.  Nothing is more appealing to me than seeing what everyone wears to that music festival.  For some reason the concert/bohemian/summer fashion inspires me. I like to see the way certain celebrities choose to present themselves as a “concert-goer.”  I also love to see what trends are happening at the festival. This year seems to be filled with dip-dyed hair, thick cat eye sunnies and as always, short shorts!

Here are some of my favorite looks* so far from this year’s Coachella:

My favorite spot to check out Coachella pictures is on the Cobrasnake.   Cobrasnake’s party photos capture events as an insider, rather than showing a journalistic approach.

What up Sister Disco readers! I’m Megan and today’s featured “homie.”

I started my blog, Greetings from Texas, a year ago when my husband’s job brought us to Houston. Growing up in the Midwest, I thought there was a lot of bizarre stuff going down in the state and I wanted to document it. My blog still chronicles my life as a new Texan but I incorporate other topical things such as Jay- Z,  New Orleans,  and my homemade music videos. I talk about cancer every once in a while too because I had that. (It sucked).

Any of you happen to be coming to Houston soon? You should. It’s a really awesome city. Here are some of my fave spots to prove it.

-GREETINGS FROM HOUSTON!-
HOUSTON EATS

One. Tiny Boxwood’s – Adorable and somewhat “girly” cafe with amazing food. Order the beet burger – it will change your life. Plus I had a celebrity sighting there!!! Read about it here.
Two. Tacos A Go-Go –  Houston has a million Mexican places. This is a very casual but the food is really authentic. The Main Street location is really colorful and unique.
Three. The Tasting Room – Though it’s a “wine cafe” I go here for the food. Their pizza, salads, and sandwiches are all awesome.  Plus they usually have live music. It’s fab!

HOUSTON SHOPPING
Four. Downtown Heights – If you like vintage stores, you will die. (In a good way.) So many good ones on one single street!! Plus this is a historical area which is something to see in itself.
Five. Cheeky Vintage – A high end vintage store. It was featured in Lucky Magazine last year and let’s be real, Lucky Magazine is legit. So is Cheeky Vintage.
Six. River Oaks – Though this area has a lot of big box stores like Gap which you can go to anywhere, the landscape makes it worth the trip. It feels more Malibu than it does Houston. Also, it has a plethora of Starbucks. Don’t believe me? Click here.

HOUSTON PASTIMES
Seven. Pinky’s –  If you’re willing to take a short ride to El Lago, Texas you can rent paddleboards or kayaks. So fun!
Eight. Boneyard Dogpark & Drinkery – Have a pooch? This place is a bar and a dogpark all in one. Genius!
Nine. Hotel Zaza’s Pool  If you book any service at their spa, you can spend the day poolside. And with a pool like this, believe me, you’ll be living large.
Not buying a plane ticket? Then get your Texas Living on vicariously through my blog. See you there friends!

Abundance is a feeling and when I close my eyes, it looks in my mind like these two photos merged together into one.  It is a word which is often spoken in conjunction with the notion of flow, conveying its power of movement and freedom.  There is an ease and continuity which is unhalted by anything that might block its pathway.  It is the choice to turn away from the feeling, and conversation, of lack, and retrain the mind to feel plentiful, perhaps even before the plenty is before you.  It is the new moon in Taurus, which arrived over the weekend.  It is the Abundance tarot card I drew this morning.  It’s the dime that was on my subway seat, and the check that arrived today in the mail.  It is Farrell’s “morning abundance song,” which I guarantee, if you had heard would render you rich for days to come.  It is the faith that you already have, and will continue to receive, everything you will ever need.

Every week we ask some of our friends and family to send us a picture that they took and tell us about it. However, this week, our friend Lis sent a handful of pictures and we loved all of them.  So, we decided to show them all to you.  Heck yeah!

Lis: This is part of a series of self portraits I took in the bathroom during the last month at my last job.

I saw this drawing on a wall in Brussels and immediately wanted to move to Mexico and start a new life.

I was lucky enough to visit Versailles during the set-up of a Takashi Murakami exhibit.

Delicious creations at an early morning farmers market in Paris.

In Costa Rica playing with colorful clay rocks I found in the river.

Every week we pick a word and each do a post on that word. This week: Homemade.

I don’t know what it is but I’m falling hard for this latest neon trend.  I can’t seem to get enough, which is actually not true at all, as I think it only take a little pop to make the neon vibrance known.  I’ve been seeing a lot of homemade/DIY inspiration for ways to bring just the right amount into your life.  These are some of my favorites from around the www.

Hey ya’lI!  I went to my first Texas wedding last weekend and I loved it! My friend Sarah, the lovely bride featured below, added so many creative and thoughtful touches to her wedding day. Guess what?! They are ALL homemade.

Sarah made banners that said CAKE, MARRIED, GUESTS and FOREVER AND A DAY that hung throughout the venue. They added such a darling and personal touch.

The bride is also a baker by trade and made the cake for the wedding. This wonderful dessert was  apple spice layered with honey leche white cake. But here is the real kicker – at the rehearsal dinner the bride and groom asked everyone to decorate the cake. Here is the result:

Though she did not make the china by hand, Sarah spent months collecting antique plates and mason jars. If you look closely, you can see that she wrapped the mason jars in old lace that belonged to her grandmother.

Sarah wore her family friend’s wedding dress on her special day. Not only was the dress gorgeous and a perfect fit, but Sarah had an after dinner cocktail-ish dress made from the train of her wedding dress. Is that not the best idea ever? (Notice the cocktail boots)

By the end of this wonderful evening, every guest had a hand in the celebration.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say congratulations to Sarah and David. They are a true match and it was an honor to celebrate their love with them. Cheers!

Today we are so excited to tell you about the eagerly anticipated video release for Monster Rally’s new single “Jaguar”, which involves two of my favorite people (I also make a cameo)!  Albert Cook , who directed the video, is not only my wonderful and talented boyfriend, he is also a filmmaker and screenwriter. Monster Rally, as you may know, is our awesome and creative brother, Teddy.   “Jaguar” is the first single off Monster Rally’s second full-length album, Beyond the Sea.

The video was shot in St. Maarten while Albert and I were there on vacation in October. It was such a fun process to be a part of and I have so enjoyed talking with Albert about the concept for the video, and watching it come to life. I could not be more proud of both of these artists and love having them in my life. So without further ado, here is Monster Rally’s “Jaguar”.

*
Beyond the Sea is the second full length album from Monster Rally. The records sampled to create this album were dug from cities across the country and have been thrown through the lens of Monster Rally’s lo-fi production. The resulting album builds upon the skeleton of 2011’s Coral, adding muscle and structure in interesting places, to create a 42 minute song-cycle and continue Monster Rally’s exploration of sonic collage.

The vinyl edition comes pressed on lava red vinyl in a single gatefold jacket, all artwork is created by Ted Feighan (Monster Rally). A limited edition signed art booklet will be included in the first 100 pre-orders.”  via Gold Robot Records.

If you like what you just hear, make a visit to Monster Rally’s website to listen to the rest of his work.

This past weekend my boyfriend and I went to our friend’s wedding in Houston, Texas (a whole post in itself).  But while we were in Texas, we made sure to schedule some time to visit Austin as well.  Neither of us had ever been to Austin, though we’ve both been wanting to for awhile.  We had such a fun time and fell in love with the city.  It is such a comfortable and beautiful place. The people are friendly and the food is delicious.

I thought this item on the menu was hilarious and had to take a picture.  Only in Texas would they offer a burrito the size of your face.  As it turns out, no matter what you order in Texas, you can never clean your plate.

If you have seen any pictures of Austin before, I’m sure you have seen a picture of Barton Springs – a pool made from natural springs that you can swim in. There are springs and pools all over this town! The weather was a bit overcast the day we were at the springs, but I can only imagine how busy it gets on a hot day.

We stayed at the Austin Motel.  Not only is it located in the coolest part of town, South Congress, but it is a family owned motel with lots of charm.  And it has been around for almost 100 years.  Our room was quirky and quaint. We loved the location and would have been happy to spend our whole time in Austin simply in and around our hotel.

While shopping, I went into Allen Boots as I had heard a lot about this store. It is completely overwhelming how many different kinds of cowboy boots, hats and gear they have in that store.

Me next to the infamous I Love You So Much sign at Jo’s Coffee! The coffee was delicious!

Outside of our hotel room. If you look closely, you can see the stone man behind the driver’s seat.

On our second day in Austin we walked along the waterfront. It was a beautiful day filled with activities. There were people playing catch with their dogs, kayaking, rowing, paddle boarding, running, riding bikes, etc. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the city and how healthy the people seemed.

Last, but certainly not least, we joined our wonderful friends (the bride and groom!) for one of the best meals of our lives. We dined at the amazing UchikoThe food was divine and the meal was completely lovely. If you ever have a chance, please make sure you check it out.

Readers, are you aware that next Thursday is Poem in Your Pocket Day in NYC?!  A wonderful tribute to the art of poetry no doubt, but let us not neglect the pocket itself in this fine celebration.

In its sartorial role, the pocket has the power to carry an air, while its utilitarian purpose frees our hands, generously holding our stuff.

And how much does it brighten our day to find a forgotten dollar or two in there?  Who of us (discount shoppers, you know who you are) hasn’t found ourself sorely disappointed to learn that no, a garment’s pockets are not simply sown shut; they are in fact simply an illusion.  A sad, disappointing illusion in which functionality has been traded for savings.

These little compartments hold space for our style and for our belongings.  For some next week, they may hold words that speak to the one who put them there.  All little reminders of who we are.

Today, we have a special treat for you, as we are so excited to share the amazing work of our friend, Mary Blakemore.  This girl is awesome and we love her multimedia creations.  In her own words, Mary explains, “The last four years I’ve been building a world using photography, video, collage, and painting.  It’s part autobiography, part dream world.  I’m interested in female relationships both as they are in reality and as I would like them to be.”  When you’re done here, make sure to head over to Mary’s site to see more of her current and completed work!
