Personal & Interior Style

I used to subscribe to Domino magazine, while it was still in regular publication.  Prior to the subscription, I’d never before had that feeling of excitement over a magazine subscription.  But with Domino things were different.  I wouldn’t open a new issue right away.  Instead I’d save it for an evening when I was home alone and could really enjoy it.  I loved those night.  I think it was the loveliness of the images, colors and layout of the magazine that made it feel so special to me.  I’ve saved every issue I ever received, and when I’m feeling like I need to jazz things up in my apartment, I refer back to old issues for inspiration.

Recently I came across this Flickr group with tons Domino images.  So fun!

A Crown of Autumn Leaves
by Annie Finch

Our voices press
from us
and twine
around the year’s

fermenting wine

Yellow fall roars
Over the ground.
Loud, in the leafy sun that pours
Liquid through doors,

Yellow, the leaves twist down

as the winding
of the vine
pulls our curling
voices—

Glowing in wind and change,
The orange leaf tells

How one more season will alter and range,
Working the strange
Colors of clamor and bells

In the winding
of the vine
our voices press out
from us
to twine

When autumn gathers, the tree
That the leaves sang
Reddens dark slowly, then, suddenly free,
Turns like a key,
Opening air where they hang

and the winding
of the vine
makes our voices
turn and wind
with the year’s
fermented wine

One of the hanging leaves,
Deeply maroon,
Tightens its final hold, receives,
Finally weaves
Through, and is covered soon

in the winding
of the vine—

Holding past summer’s hold,
Open and strong,
One of the leaves in the crown is gold,
Set in the cold
Where the old seasons belong.

Here is my crown
Of winding vine,
Of leaves that dropped,
That fingers twined,
another crown
to yield and shine
with a year’s
fermented wine.

Yesterday, I wrote a guest post over at WELL in L.A. about my efforts, guidance and inspiration for keeping myself from becoming – and staying – stuck in life.  Today, I’m applying those same general principles to my wardrobe and offering you my top four tips to avoid getting stuck in a fashion rut.

1.  The clothes in my closet make me look and feel amazing

Imagine if this was your mindset before you even began to pick out an outfit.  Personally, I know my thoughts fall far more often into the realm of I have nothing to wear or everything I own makes me look…[insert a slew of critical descriptions].  But if you can get on board with the idea that the energy behind your thoughts contributes to your experience, why not apply it to all things in life – big and small.

2.  “Let yourself be silently drawn to the stronger pull of what you really love.”  ~Rumi

I came across this Rumi quote earlier this year and it has been a continual source of liberating guidance for me.  Though I hadn’t before thought much of applying these words to my clothing selections, I can’t really think of a better style tip.  I know I have a bunch of things I love in my closet, yet I often return to the same few items over and over.  Or, I don’t wear certain things because I have somehow categorized them as only for a particular season, or type of event.  Dig a little deeper and reintegrate those items that have been forgotten.

3.  Strut your stuff

I mean this one literally and figuratively.  I think it’s hard to underestimate the psychological value of both getting outside to take a walk, and loving the shoes you’re in.  Everything from the feet up can be the most basic of basic but feeling good about your footwear can do wonders for your overall look.  So strap on a pair, stand up tall and take in the world around you.

4. Just get it done

Create the time and space to leave the house feeling good about the way you look.  There’s no need to wait until you can afford a whole new wardrobe, have lost that extra weight or have somewhere exciting to go.  You deserve to feel good, inside and out.  Today’s the day.

Hop over to WELL in L.A. if you missed my post yesterday, and while you’re there, spend some time perusing all the goodness that Erin has to offer.  The girl absolutely exudes motivation, inspiration and love.

TGIF, y’all.  I’m working with some real spotty internet at the moment and am having trouble posting, so I’m calling in a rain check on this rainy day.  Back tomorrow.

Hope your day is everything you need it to be!

I could write a letter to shoes expressing how much I miss them and love them.  I have three pairs of shoes with me on this trip – a pair of whack flip flops, some dirty Toms and a pair of hiking boots. Sometimes, I just Google Image “shoes” to see all the different kinds and options.

Here are a few of my favorite looks:

I cannot wait until I am reunited with my shoes upon my return home!

At this time four years ago, I was getting myself ready to spend a week in the desert at Burning Man. I had never been before and had very little idea what to expect. I’d heard a smattering of details about this week-long event in which thousands of people transcend upon Black Rock City, Nevada and set-up an entire city, of sorts. After the festivities are over, everything is taken down, cleaned up and sought to be left without a trace.

There are so many experiences to be had at Burning Man that it is nearly impossible to easily convey what goes on there. In my best attempt, it combines a festival, art colony, camp ground, rave and commune into one experience where anything is possible.

People attend Burning Man for the community, the party, the art, the music and the freedom. A big draw for me was the dress. As you know, (Farrell &) I absolutely love an occasion to don a wig, wear a costume or the like. And when it comes to this, absolutely anything goes at Burning Man.

Though I haven’t been back since my first time, that isn’t stopping me from taking part in the fun. So, as the second installment of our POP-Up Shop, here are a few of my Burning Man Prep selections:

When I went to Montreal over Memorial Day weekend and to Amsterdam last fall, I rented out my apartment on Airbnb.com.  On both trips, my friends and I stayed in Airbnb apartments.  Clearly, I’m a fan.

One of the services offered by the site is to have your home professionally photographed.  So a few weeks ago, a photographer stopped by and snapped a few shots of my apartment.  I just got the pictures back and by way of a little (literally) home tour, I thought I’d invite you in.

Despite always wanting to change certain details, I think the pictures turned out great. Check out the photographer’s professional site here. He’s really talented.

Last month, Farrell and Albert took a trip to “the beach” – the house our grandparents built in Huron, Ohio.  Growing up, we spent a large part of our summers there swimming, riding bikes and playing with our cousins.  The last time I was there, I took a bunch of pictures of the inside of the house, which is so full of its own personality.  To be honest, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of capturing the details of this home that every one of our many aunts, uncles and cousins could probably describe – inch by inch – from memory.

*Our grandmother‘s father, Gramp, painted all of these pictures.
