Our friend Deke is someone who brings music into the lives of his friends in many forms.  I’ve been turned onto countless bands, attended amazing concerts and danced my way through many nights thanks to him.  Today, we are thrilled to share with you an original track  that he created to assist us all in calming our minds, observing our thoughts and connecting to our breath.  In addition to the YouTube below (which also showcases Deke’s photography prowess), you can download the mp3 here.

So sit up tall.  Feel your shoulders in line with your hips.  Let your head and neck be an extension of your spine.  Bring your attention to your inhale, letting the breath fill your stomach like a balloon.  Then release the breath as you focus on the exhale.  Close your eyes, maintain your attention on the breath and release your mind to the music.

If you notice along the way that you’ve gotten caught up in your thoughts, it’s okay.  Don’t judge yourself; just bring your attention back to your breath.

Calm - Installation by Regine Ramseier

I have always had an affinity for cleanliness. I can remember cleaning up my room and folding all my clothes by the time I was five years old. I loved order, and still do. Every morning when I wake up, I make my bed. Every night before I go to sleep, I tidy up my room. These are practices allow me to start and end my day with a clean environment, inside and out.

In the meditation that I practice, there is an emphasis on internal cleaning. At the end of the work day, you are supposed to imagine all the impressions of the day being removed from your heart.

“All of our experiences—actions and reactions, thoughts and emotions—leave impressions. These impressions, called samskaras, accumulate over time, influencing our view of reality and consequently our behaviour. As habit patterns emerge and solidify, we continue to react in the present as we have in the past, setting the blueprint for future action. In this way we become, in a real sense, slaves to our past experience.” (Found here.)

And while we are on the topic of cleaning, when I was in Cleveland this past week, I helped my mom do some of her spring cleaning – or more specifically, cleaning out her closets. The end result was SO gratifying. Here are the pictures to prove it:

Here is a checklist for spring cleaning from Martha Stewart.

Also, here is an article from the New York Times about how removing clutter can improve your health.

On Sunday night my whole family had an amazing dinner at my Dad’s house. There was a tornado warning and as a result, the power went out. We sat in the candle light eating cake and trying out the age booth app on the iPhone.

I was the first of the table to take have my picture taken and travel 30 years time to see what I will look like in 2042. Here is the result:

Upon seeing this photo, I screamed. At first, I laughed a little, but that laughter suddenly turned to tears and horror. I think I kept saying, “no, no!”

There is no way that when I am 56 years old, I will look that much like an old grandma, will I?

After that whole experience, I vow to take better care of my skin. Eat more anti-oxidants. Get enough sleep. Exercise regularly. And have a sense of humor about myself. Maybe I shouldn’t take the way I look SO seriously.

Over the years, I have developed a passion for all natural products; it has almost become an obsession.  I love to read about new products and find out what their brands are all about.  After a lot of trial and error, I have come to really love certain beauty products. Here are the ones that I have developed a small love affair with:

Intelligent Nutrient Leave-In Conditioner

Intelligent Nutrients has the same founder as Aveda. Their tagline is “everything we put in our bodies should be nutritious and safe.”  This leave in conditioner smells of cinnamon and leaves my curls feeling so moisturized.

Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Liquid Soap

This soap is the best ever. I use it as a body wash, but it can be used to wash laundry, dishes, your teeth, etc. It makes your body tingle and has the most refreshing peppermint smell. Also, check out the documentary made about Dr. Bronner himself called Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox. He is a bit nutty.

Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser

This whole entire beauty line is amazing. Every single one of their products produces amazing results. I will never forget the first time my sister and I tried their product line. We were both instantly in love. This cleanser is a bit expensive, but anything Tata Harper is worth it.

Soapwalla Lip Balm

I have mentioned Soapwalla’s amazing deordorant before, so you might be familiar with this brand. However, she has a new product and it’s amazing. This lip balm works wonders! The citrus ginger is the best!

All the products above are organic, vegan and chemical-free.

This post comes JUST in time, as it is more of a wintery dish. On the plane to India, I saw the most beautiful and vibrant recipe in Whole Living magazine and knew I had to make it. It is super simple and delicious. Plus, its really fun to eat something insanely PURPLE!

Beet Pasta with (or without) Ricotta

1 lb. (about 2-3) red beets, trimmed & scrubbs
1/4 cup olive oil
Coarse salt
1/2 cup toasted walnuts
1 Tbsp. tomatoes, chopped
12 oz. whole wheat or farro spaghetti
1/2 cup fresh ricotta
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes

  • Preheat over to 425. Drizzle beets with oil and sprinkle with salt. Wrap tightly in foil and roast until tender, 1 hour. Peel and chop once they’re cool
  • Pulse beets, walnuts and tomatoes in a food processor. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook pasta in salted water according to package directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the pasta water and return to pot. Toss pasta with beet mixture, adding pasta water until creamy.
  • Serve with Ricotta and a drizzle of olive oil.
  • Add crushed red pepper flakes for some spice!

This past weekend, between a mixture of still feeling sick and wanting to feel at home, I spent my Saturday night lying on Lauren’s couch “helping” her de-clutter her apartment. That experience, along with a few conversations I had with friends in India, really has me thinking about all that we consume.

I started to become deeply aware of all the garbage I create in one day. Trips to the bodega.  Buying bottle after bottle of body wash. The list is really endless. i have decided to really try and do something about it. I also want to focus on reusing things that I already own.

While searching for ideas to reduce and reuse, I stumbled upon a great blog called Zero Home Waste. On this blog, there is a huge list of tips. Here are some of my favorites from that list:

  • Buy in bulk or at the counter (see Zero Waste Grocery Shopping), bring reusable bags (dry goods), jars (wet items such as meat, deli, fish, cheese, oil, peanut butter) and bottles (liquids: oil, soy sauce, shampoo, conditioner).
  • Refill your bottles with bulk shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is short, you also have the “no-poo” option: rinse your hair, massage baking soda in, then rinse, with vinegar for shine. Or use a shampoo bar. Instead of hairspray, switch to lemon water in a spray bottle. To go longer between washes, substitute dry shampoo for cornstarch (in bulk).
  • Welcome natural cleaning alternatives: bulk castile soap on floors and sinks, homemade all purpose cleanerbaking soda for scrubbing jobs, and hydrogen peroxide for mildew.
  • For body/face soap, find a package-free solid soap or bulk liquid castile soap. To exfoliate, switch to bulk baking soda or oatmeal for the face and salt for the body. For a mask, switch to bulk clays (French, Kaolin, Bentonite, etc…), mixed with water or apple cider vinegar.

She has tons of recipes for homemade beauty, cleaning products and ways to reuse products on the site. Check it out!

I would also love to hear any of your tips on how you reduce, reuse and recycle in your life!

I started doing dance cardio workouts at the beginning of November. The workout is not a dance routine by any means, it’s more of a jump-around-and-let-loose-for-30-minutes kind of thing. If you asked me a couple of months ago to do some dance cardio, I would have laughed at you and said no, thank you. I would have thought it would be lame, hard and cheesy. But now, it’s my remedy for the winter blues. As we say in our family, “first you mock the position, then you are IN the positon”.

You see, I am a self disagnosed member of the SAD (Season Affect Disorder) community. If you are like me, and the idea of dreary skies and dark days makes you want to tear up, then you can understand the extremes one would take to get through the winter. Of course, I have a respect for the seasons and the time to hybernate, but at what cost. Not MY happiness. So, the two things that are getting my through this winter are Vitamin D and dance cardio.

I usually start my workouts thinking about “my problem of the day” but by the end of my workout I am almost always thinking about how awesome my friends are or how grateful I am for my parents. This is what having private party with myself every day has done for me. It has brought me gratitude during a season in which I am generally down. It has also made me more loving to the people who allow me to be carefree, cause truth is, I AM strengthening my heart.

As for the music:

I listen to Girl Talk’s most recent album “All Day” when I dance. Girl Talk’s music is perfect for dancing. Jacob Krupnick made a video for the entire “All Day” album of people dancing all over New York City. His project was made to inspire people to dance more (which is what I am also trying to do here!). You should definitely check the whole video out, but here are two of my favorite tracks:

This past Christmas, I wanted to do something different. I am usually pretty stressed when gift giving; I want my gifts to be the best that have ever been given. I spend so much time thinking about the perfect gift to give that sometimes, I forget to give a gift at all. This year I realized that I just wanted to give the people I loved something beautiful. I decided to make terrariums and boy, oh boy, was it fun.  I had only two places to go – a craft store and a plant nursery.

Making terrariums is very simple. All you need a glass vase and these few things:

How to make your basic terrarium:

Step 1:  Add an inch think layer of pebbles to the bottom of your vase.

Step 2:  Add 2-4 inches of potting soil over the pebbles.

Step 3: Pick the arrangement of plants and which plants to use.

Step 4: Plant accordingly

Step 5: Cover with moss

Step 6: (Optional) Add miniature toys or rock beds.

I followed these instructions and everything went great!  Here are some pictures of the ones I made for Christmas presents.

After receiving his terrarium, my brother told me about this amazing terrarium artist named Paula Hayes. You should definitely check out her extraordinary work!

As we count down the final days of 2011, I have been thinking how nice it would be to start the new year from a place of total forgiveness.  I’ve been holding onto the quote below for some time and believe now is a powerful time in which we, collectively, have the opportunity to unburden ourselves of past hurts, mistakes and regrets.  It would make us all a little lighter and free up space for each of us to experience the best of the year to come.

Temple of Forgiveness, Burning Man 2007

“The choice to follow love through to its completion is the choice to seek completion within ourselves.  The point at which we shut down on others is the point at which we shut down on life.  We heal as we heal others, and we heal others by extending our perceptions past their weaknesses. Until we have seen someone’s darkness, we don’t really know who that person is. Until we have forgiven someone’s darkness, we don’t really know what love is. Forgiving others is the only way to forgive ourselves, and forgiveness is our greatest need.”

– Marianne Williamson

Farrell and I both read a number of blogs everyday.  Many of the ones I look at could be characterized as a collection of lovely things: pretty pictures, delicious looking food, sweet thoughts, etc.  As the season of holiday indulgence is well upon us, I thought it might be a nice moment to pause and indulge each of our senses with beautiful things.  So I put together this post with that in mind, pulling mainly from images and videos I’ve seen around the blogosphere, in hopes of treating you to a full sensual experience.
