Coast to Coast

We started this new Coast to Coast series as another way for to keep up with each other now that we live so far apart.  This week, I am up!

1.  What do you consider to be essential groceries to keep in your kitchen?

Oh, girl! This question just makes me feel super excited! I love that I have my own kitchen again and I love that you asked me about foodems!

* Brussel Spouts – my go-to veggie. I have a small love affair with these little guys.

* Quinoa – This grain has completely replaced rice in my life.

* Black Beans – SO good and so versatile

* Tea – I quit drinking coffee (yikes!) so we have been chai’ing it up in this place.

2.  What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

I just had a job interview and I wasn’t nervous, but my body kept thinking I was. I made myself fake laugh until I was actually laughing just to get the butterflies out.

3.  If you had to get a tattoo today, what would you get?

Something to do with our family. Maybe McGillicuddy (a flying horse that my dad told us stories about when we were little) wings on my back. It is too cliche now.

4.  Do you have a product that you’re really loving lately?

When I was in Boulder, my most dearest loveliest friend gave me this bottle before I left:

It is a vanilla scented oil that I have been putting on every day since. I look forward to it every morning. The funniest part is that I have no idea what it is. I promise I will report back.

5.  What is something you’ve learned over the past week?

Your own perspective is so important in life. If you think you can’t do something, you can’t. If you think you can have your dream job, you can. It is all about your outlook on life.

Also, constantly looking at Google Maps while I drive around in the blazing sun makes me carsick, every time.

Last week we started this new Coast to Coast series as another way for Farrell and I to keep up with each other now that we live so far apart.  Last week I asked Farrell a series of questions (you can check them out here); this week she has posed a few for me to answer.

BLUE on New York’s Lower East Side

1. What is your favorite accessory right now?

My friend Kristin is a super talented jewelry designer and she named this necklace”Lulu” after me (Lulu is a nickname of mine).  I have it in metal and gold.  They have immediately become my constant go-to’s.  I’m wearing them all the time!

2. What is your favorite thing about NYC and what is your least favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about NYC is its energy.  My least favorite thing about it is…  Well, I don’t know, actually.  I wish I had enough space to host dinner parties, and an outdoor space to grow a garden.  I also wish living in NYC didn’t come with an ongoing sense of conflict about living away from my family.  And I wish it was spring & summer here all year round.

3. How does it feel to have bangs? Are you going to grow them out or keep them?

I got bangs about two months ago and they’re easily the most exciting thing that has happened in my life this year.  They feel good but sometimes I still feel like I have a thick toupee pasted on my forehead.  I can’t really decide if I’m going to keep them or grow them out though I did just trim them, so they’re at least here to stay for a little while.  I’m thinking about growing out the rest of my hair long again, like this.  Also, I’ve tried this side sweep a few times.  I think it’s really pretty but it’s not working out so well for me.

4. What song have you been listening to over and over lately?

I’m actually feeling like I’m in a bit of a music rut this week.  Last week however I went on a crazy Van Morrison kick.  I probably listened to the song “Madam George” about 300 times.  I love that song but I’m also really eager to find a new album or band to get into.

5. What is your favorite museum in New York City and why?

This question makes me feel like I should go to museums more often.  Though I don’t always love the exhibits I see there, I think I have to go with The New Museum.  It’s in my neighborhood and I have a bit of a sense that it is my museum.  It is free on Thursday evenings so I pop in on my way home from time to time.  It makes the whole experience very accessible.

We are starting a new series where Lauren and I ask each other questions from across the country. It isn’t always easy for us to connect now with the time change, so we thought this would be a great idea. I am up first!

1.  What’s the thing you’ve noticed most being in L.A.?

How important it is to me that the sun is shining on my face and I miss my sister.

2.  Do you think you’re going to paint the walls in your new apartment?

I like things to feel really clean and white with hints of warmth. If that vibe is achievable by keeping the walls white, then I will keep them as they are. If not, a light blue always does the trick.

3.  What’s the last book you read/podcast you listened to/movie you watched?

I am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I have only read about 40 pages, but I love it. I have always loved her as Sugar. She is a very direct, honest and brave writer. I would recommend it and I am not even done with it!

The last podcast I listened to was the Gorilla vs. Bear podcast and I loved the M.I.A. song.

The last movie I watched was Night Shift and it was ridiculous.

4.  Remember how much you missed your shoes when you were traveling?  Have you gotten any new ones?

I DO have a new pair of shoes and let me tell you, they are a rockin’.

It was well worth the wait!

5.  What’s the best thing that happened for you today?

Honestly, it sounds cheesy but doing the second day of my meditation for the Deepak and Oprah 21 Day Meditation challenge. It was a great break and I liked the centering phrase “Balance is my true nature” because I am all about balance.

If you want to sign up for the 21 Days of Meditation, you still can here!
