GIF_Grace_Kelly_kids_run (1) I stumbled on this wonderful PBS video series yesterday called “Blank on Blank: Famous Names, Lost Interviews.”  These short, illustrated videos cover topics such as Grace Kelly on JFK, Kurt Cobain on Identity and Fidel Castro, the Lost Interview.  There are two seasons worth of episodes and I highly suggest you check out the site for many others!

I have been known to ask a lot of questions in my day. I am not sure what that is all about. Is it a nervous thing? A curious thing? A fun thing? I am not sure really. All I know is I like to find out about people. I like to know what they are actually like instead of waiting for years to break down their walls.

So, as you can guess, I have taken to listening to interviews. Most recently, I listened to an interview with one of my favorite comedians, Will Ferrell, by Marc Moran (who I feel kind of whatever about).

Facetime with my favorite Californian hand puppets!

F: Did you learn anything about yourself on your most recent trip to Thailand?

L:  I already knew this but I was reminded that I can’t really absorb information about a place before I get there.  Guide books and maps mean nothing to me until I’m sitting in the place and can figure out what I want to do from there.

F:  Were there any noteworthy lessons that came up while you were halfway around the world?

L:  There were almost no Thai people in the areas we went (minus people working in tourism and hospitality), only western tourists.  I’m not sure what the lesson is there, specifically, but it’s something I didn’t notice much at first and then thought a lot about once I’d been there longer.

F:  What was your favorite thing we did in Cleveland for Christmas?

L: Ah, seems so long ago!  I really enjoy the dirty Santa gift exchange we’ve starting doing on Christmas Eve.

F:  Do you have any resolutions?

L:  I decided to use the word aspiration instead of resolution this year.  One such aspiration of mine is to read more.

F:  Is it cold there?

L. Oh yeah! Warming up over the weekend though, so that’s something.

I’m back in NYC after a great trip to Cleveland for Christmas followed by ten days in Thailand with some of my best friends in the world.  I was feeling strangely anxious going into the trip but lemme tell ya, the picturesque Thai beaches put that nonsense to rest in no time!

IMG_2224We spent the first half of the trip on an island called Koh Lanta.  We rented motor bikes and basically spent the days driving around and exploring various beaches along the coast.

After Koh Lanta, a couple of us headed off to Railay Beach.  Farrell said Railay was her favorite place in Thailand and i completely understand why.  Surrounded by these enormous jutting cliffs, Railay is both stunning and super relaxing.

This trip reminded me that I never regret getting out there and seeing the world, despite all the life factors that can play in my mind against doing so.  I was also reminded that there’s no shame in taking a straight-up beach vacation!  There’s nothing I love more than running around mostly barefoot and loosing track of days.

I hope your new year is off to a wonderful start and that we all have more than a few scenic sunsets by the beach in 2014!

A few years ago my brothers and sister were all in Cleveland together for a few days before I arrived. David had recently taken an aversion to anyone using the word ‘should.’  Everyone else had gotten quickly on board, and by the time I got into town, every ‘should’ utterance was immediately echoed by someone else.

…maybe before you pick that up you should–

“SHOULD”

Next time you guys should–

“SHOULD”

Mom should really–

“Lauren, stop should-ing all over the place!”

They all thought this was hilarious.  I was not as amused, but that’s neither here nor there; the   should-y shaming continued our entire time together.  It’s an interesting thing to hone in on and one that persists in my life.  Let’s be honest, no one likes a should-y situation.

Last week’s New York City snow

F:  What do you do when you feel off-balanced?

L: You mean other than criticize myself :). Usually making some time to focus on my health gets me back on track.

F:  What is your favorite part about the Christmas season?

L: I guess the familiarity of the season is kind of comforting. Coming up with gifts you’re excited to give is pretty awesome, when it happens. Nice lights and decorations can also be gorgeous!

F:  Is there any kind of food you have been craving?

L: I could seriously stand to up my greens intake!

F:  Do you have any big plans for NYE?

L: Beaching in southeast Asia! I’m excited but it’s also a little hard for me to write that without feeling kinda obnoxious.

F:  Are you taking any supplements during the winter?

L: I was taking vitamin D until I was told that there’s something bad about the synthetic capsules. I could start again. I’ve also been taking a daily probiotic. Do you have other recommendations?

Before the power goes out, find the house.  There’s something there inside that will be useful to you in the dawn.

Don’t let yourself continue to sleep so long; repeat the lyrics to your favorite song.  Prepare for flight (an obvious rhyme about casting light).  Prepare for snow, you’re always cold.  Where to go and how and why.  How those birds flap freely in the sky!  Untethered ends

Decorum serves order, simply sung.  Don’t you know you’re not the only one?  Whistling wands create the sun.  Slow it down.  The final plucks.

First voice heard.  humming sweetly starting over | second city of light.

Spring will come, ray by ray.  Bask in brightness, beat your drum.  Summer clouds turn into storms. Bird songs dizzy winding down.

I’m slowly making my way through the book Uncreative Writing, which so far talks a lot about the reappropriation of language, text, code, and the like in the digital age.  Somewhat along the same lines, I thought this quick video on the history & future of emoticons and their ability for new expressions of emotion was pretty interesting.  Have you heard of Emoji Dick (a full emoji translation of Moby Dick)?  How does all this new technology make you feel?  🙂  😐  😦

In honor of all the art enthusiasts who have gathered at Art Basel Miami this weekend, I thought I’d select a few of my favorite Dan Flavin works with fluorescent tubes.  I was actually unfamiliar with Dan Flavin until reading this New Yorker article about art dealing on my way home from LA last week.  The article profiled art dealer David Zwirner who explained, “One of the reasons there’s so much talk about money [in the art world] is that it’s so much easier to talk about than the art.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEDDY!

photo

When I flee New York in November, it’s only on the way out that I realize how much I need a break. There’s something about lugging a suitcase down four flights of stairs, already late, that reminds me of how calm it is so many other places.

I pull my suitcase down the street, its wheels rolling unevenly over wet concrete.  After fitting said suitcase under the subway turnstile and carrying it down another set of stairs, I eventually find myself a seat on the train.  It’s then that I realize I’m about to have six! uninterrupted daytime hours to myself, once I make it to the flight.  Almost simultaneously, I realize coffee and croissant do not make for a proper day’s nutritional or caloric intake.

The summer is all outdoors. But once the chill begins, those outdoor hours wane.  I forget how much I need to be outside; I realize I barely noticed the slow effect of my inattention.  I realize I’ve once again lost the balance between healthy downtime and lethargy.

As I’m leaving aloneness I recall the transition that will soon put me back into my family, connecting just long enough for it to be hard to leave.  I’ll come back calmer and more peaceful, and I’ll be ready to take a deep inhale.

F:  What was your favorite part about your LA visit?

L:  Well, this little buddy above was a delightful find during our visit to LACMA!  I also loved the day we spent in Malibu; it’s so gorgeous there.  Overall, I loved being out of the cold and getting to spend some low-key, chill time with our family.

F:  What is your favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving?

L:  Pumpkin pie, hands down.

F: Can you share one of your favorite pictures from 2013?

L:  I recently took this picture on my way home from work.  I was shooting the pigeons before the monk came out to feed them and then caught this moment.

F:  Do you like the holiday season? If yes, why? If no, why?

L:  I like it enough.  It’s always nice when it’s happening but I don’t spend all year looking forward to it or anything along those lines.

F. What is your favorite season?

L:  Summer or Spring, if it’s a warm one!
