Earlier this week I listened to this incredibly powerful interview that Terry Gross did with Tim Gunn on Fresh Air. I always liked Tim Gunn when I used to watch Project Runway. He comes across so well poised and sophisticated, yet incredibly human and kind. A few years ago I’d heard that after Gunn’s long-term boyfriend died of AIDS several years ago he’d chosen to live the remainder of his life celibate. This incredibly honest interview discusses that as well as Gunn’s early childhood experiences with bullying, the years he spent in a mental home for children, his relationship with his parents and process of acknowledging his homosexuality. I found the whole thing so touching and I think we could all learn a lot both from Gunn’s story and the way in which he shares it.  Hear the interview here.

Last night I found this picture of me at Burning Man about six years ago. It makes me happy.

F: Today is day 21 of your cleanse. Can you tell me how you feel about the whole process?

L:  I’ve been thinking I’d like to write a post about my whole experience so, yes, but not right now.

F. What kind of music are you listening to this week?

L:  Ugh, I haven’t found my grove yet this week.  These are the songs I was listening to last week though:

F:  What is one thing that is getting you through this winter?

L:  It’s hard to differentiate the cleanse I’ve been doing from this question but, in large part because of it, I have been meditating more, generally going to bed at a decent hour and focusing almost entirely on my health.

F. Do you have a picture assigned to my contact in your phone? If yes, what is it? If no, why not?

L:  I don’t and I’m tempted to say, “Oh, you can do that?!”  I mean, I guess I know you can do that but I’ve never done that, I don’t think.  If I did, I think I’d use this one of you (couldn’t crop Albie out):

F: What was the first picture you took with your new camera?

L: Straight to the selfie & only room for improvement.

I probably don’t need to tell you that we’ve been facing some cold days of late in NYC.  For me this season usually goes hand in hand with dry, itchy, red, flaky skin.  The combination of cold wind and dry heat from the space heaters that warm my apartment are my sensitive skin’s worst nightmare.  However, with significant trial and error, I seem to have found a skin care regime that’s really working for me these days.  So, if you’re in the market for some moisture, these are my suggestions:

ShiKai Borage Therapy Dry Skin – This body lotion is the real deal. I don’t know much about the borage plant (you can read about it here) but it works wonders. I seriously love this lotion and have never used a better one. I buy mine at Whole Foods.

Jojoba and Coconut Oil – I use coconut oil mainly to take off make-up and sometimes as a face moisturizer.  I use jojoba oil right out of the shower on my face and body (under my lotion, so to speak).  I also use it as a facial moisturizer when I first wake up and after I wash my face, before applying the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – I first bought this facial moisturizer on a desperate winter day walking around the city with Farrell.  The skin on my face was so dry it hurt!  I can’t tell you how great it is.  The cream is so hydrating without being at all oily.  I also use this brand’s face wash, however after reading this blog post, I’m looking forward to replacing it with raw honey once I run out.

NUXE Reve de Miel – Honey Lip Balm – Simply the best.  And I’ve tried many, a many lip balm.

January is a month so many of us are working to set healthy routines and practices in various areas of our lives.  This is apparent not only in my own daily life but in my email inbox as well.  Lately, many newsletters to which I subscribe have been sprinkling a range of healthy tips and inspirational messages my way so I thought I’d share a few of the ones I’ve found most helpful with you.  Cheers to a happy and healthy weekend!

Most of the time we are occupied with our own thoughts–thinking about what has happened in the past or imagining what might happen in the future.  Many of us live most of our lives on autopilot. Through mindfulness we develop the capacity to become more aware of what is happening in our lives as they are unfolding.  And we do this without coloring it with our judgments, fears, hopes, or fantasies.

By reducing distractions, mindfulness helps us focus our attention, enabling us to directly experience what is happening right here, right now.

After all, nothing ever happens in the past or the future.  “Now” is the only time where our lives unfold.  The only moment when we are alive.

F: How is your cleanse going?

L:  I think I’m pretty obsessed with the whole thing, to be honest.  I’m on Day 8 of following this cleanse diet for lunch and having Clean smoothies for breakfast and dinner.  Overall, I think it’s going well.  I think about it all day long and am somewhat amazed that I’m really doing it.  I feel good.

F: What have you learned about yourself in the month of January?

L:  I can do it!  Haha.  Kidding.  Kind of.

F: Who is YOUR favorite artist?

L:  Nearly impossible question, I admit.  I’ve always loved this mural by Julie Mehretu that I read about in The New Yorker but I don’t know any of her other work.

F:  What is your preferred form of exercise and are you doing it?

L:  Yoga is the only type of “exercise” I’ve ever done consistently, though not so much recently.  In the last couple of years I’ve realized that I really like hiking but it’s not something I have the opportunity to do very often.

F:  What are you reading? Listening to?

L:  I’m still slowly reading these two books and am now also reading Clean.  I need to commit to one and start wrapping then up.  I haven’t been listening to a ton of music this week though I have listened to the most recent James Blake album a few times.  It’s right for when it’s right.

I follow Steal Like an Artist author, Austin Kleon, on Instagram where he frequently uploads his newspaper blackout poetry.  Have you seen any of them?  Though I’ve yet to do it, I always think it would be fun to make some of my own.  Perhaps I will and then I can share it with you as original content 🙂

A lovely night with some friends

photo Thanks to a lingering stomach bug, I’m just settling back into life following my foreign travels. I’m mostly unpacked (something I always consider a victory!), save for my carry on/purse which could use a little post-vaca attention. Though Thailand’s sandy beaches and beautifully blue water sound endlessly appealing, I have to say I’m so happy to be at home.  I have a new found appreciation for my apartment these days.  I’m not sure quite what it is (perhaps it’s the space heaters in every room) but I’m just really enjoying spending time here lately.  Though I have a never ending list of home improvements I’d like to make, I really love this little apartment of mine.

Yesterday I got completely lost in the “Survival Tips for Life In a Tiny Apartment” archives on the blog Reading My Tea Leaves.  Its author, Erin Boyle, and her husband live in a 240 square foot space (almost half the size of my apartment).  While there are some great tips in there for sure, the biggest thing I came away with was the importance of being thoughtful about your space, how you use it and what you allow to come inside.  I’m feeling a major de-cluttering coming on and I can’t wait!

I was recently listening to this mix that Monster Rally did for MTV Hive and discovered a song by the Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke.

After listening to this one track over and over again I decided to check out more of Astatke’s music. I love the exotic sounds that are included in this record; they make me dream of hot, dry streets in far away lands.
