It’s Friday! The weekend in a mere hours away and I’m ready to resume a life of leisure. It’s been a minute since we’ve played a little music over here and I thought it high time to get back to some sounds. Hope you’re picking up what I’m throwing down. Tootles.
And Im caught one more time
Up on cyprus avenue
And Im caught one more time
Up on cyprus avenue
And Im conquered in a car seat
Not a thing that I can do
I may go crazy
Before that mansion on the hill
I may go crazy
Before that mansion on the hill
But my heart keeps beating faster
And my feet cant keep still
And all the little girls rhyme something
On the way back home from school
And all the little girls rhyme something
On the way back home from school
And the leaves fall one by one by one by one
Call the autumn time a fool
Yeah baby my tongue gets tied
Every every every time I try to speak
My tongue gets tied
Every time I try to speak
And my inside shakes just like a leaf on a tree
I think Ill go on by the river with my cherry cherry wine
I believe Ill go walking by the railroad with my cherry cherry wine
If I pass the rumbling station where the lonesome engine drivers pine
And wait a minute, yonder comes my lady
Rainbow ribbons in her hair
Yonder comes my lady
Rainbow ribbons in her hair
Six white horses and a carriage
Shes returning from the fair
Baby, baby, baby
And if Im caught one more time
Up on cyprus avenue
And if Im caught one more time
Up on cyprus avenue
And Im conquered in a car seat
And Im looking straight at you
Way up on, way up on, way up on….
The avenue of trees
Keep walking down
In the wind and the rain, darling
You keep walking down when the sun shone through the trees
Nobody, no, no, no, nobody stops me from loving you baby
So young and bold, fourteen years old
Baby, baby, baby…
Well you’re in your little room
and you’re working on something good
but if it’s really good
you’re gonna need a bigger room
and when you’re in the bigger room
you might not know what to do
you might have to think of
how you got started sitting in your little room

I’ve become a major Spotify user and mostly I think it’s mostly fantastic, but every so often it leads to crushing disappointment when a band you want to listen to isn’t on there. This happened to me the other night when I was looking for a full-on Beatles fix. In order to satisfy the craving, I let Youtube guide me, listening to one song and then clicking through to another and another. I created the Youtube playlist below to share with you the resulting selection of that 30-min experience. It really only leaves me wanting more and more.
Tracklist:
We Can Work It Out

I Am the Walrus
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Over the weekend, at my friends’ wedding reception some friends and I had a conversation recalling how much fun New York City was the week that Michael Jackson died. Four years ago last week, that period of time will forever stick with me. You could hear Michael Jackson songs blasting everywhere you went. As you walked down the street, cars would pass with their windows down and Michael blaring. Every bar or party you went to would inevitably turn into a Michael Jackson sing-a-long or dance party. It was one of those specific moments in time in which everyone in the city was experiencing something together and it was incredible. Say what you will about Michael’s life and the conditions that made him who he was (I certainly do) but there’s something incredibly special about a person’s death that is met with a whole population turning to the same songs in celebration.
When I was about 17, my boyfriend introduced me to the saying “six of one, half a dozen of the other.” For some reason I could never quite wrap my head around this phrase. Six to one and a half a dozen to the other? Six and one and a half of a dozen the other? It just doesn’t really make sense to me; even now I had to google the saying to get it right. Bottom line, I’m told it basically means two things are the same, interchangeable. But in my mind it continues to have some meaning related to being half of a whole, like in the way June is six months into the year. Anyway, this year I’ve been listening to music a little differently than I have in the past. Each month (minus March), I’ve created a new spotify playlist and just dumped any music I’m currently listening to into it. As we’re now at the six to one marker, I thought I’d compile all the songs into one playlist. Here it is.
I have been working on the westside of Los Angeles and there is a serious case of June Gloom happening over there. Gloominess doesn’t tend to be a word that brings tons of positive images, however I am enjoying the gloomy break from the sunshine. I get to wear some other clothes from my closet and not feel bad about missing the sunny days while inside. The weather has also led me to listen to certain songs I wouldn’t otherwise be listening to. Here is my June Gloom playlist.
I just can’t listen to enough music these days. I’ve also been doing a lot of DJing for my office mates at work. From time to time, we have what we call Power Hours in which I pick (or take a request for) a specific musician/band. We then listen to that artist for as long is left in the day, or until the Power Hour reaches another such natural conclusion. A few of our recents that quickly come to mind are Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, The Brian Ferry Orchestra The Jazz Age and Elvis Presley. It makes for a good time.
Meanwhile, I’ve also been building my own rotation:
