We’re so psyched for tomorrow night when our little brother is having his first solo art exhibition. If you’re in NYC, come by and say hello! The evening will include a 1-hr Monster Rally performance.

Dear Sugar

(Image via The Rumpus)
Sorry if I am a bit self-helpy lately but, let me tell you, these posts are mostly reminders to myself. Since I have been back from our trip, I have basically been trying to remember who I want to be and where I want to go. It is not a difficult task, but it is a conscious one.
Dear Sugar is an advice column that is featured on The Rumpus. The image above is a poster made of advice that Sugar has given throughout the years. Ever since I read this post, I knew this Sugar was an honest, vulnerable and ballsy woman. I love her. I hope you do too.
Here and here are two of my other favorites. Also, Lauren was so into the book here.
As If It Were a Dream / 2
And this is where they stayed, occasionally tilting their heads and necks to measure the other’s steadiness. Eventually they’d fly, but it didn’t seem that they were in any hurry. They were so similar that only their slightest differences set them apart. You got the sense they knew each other well.
Birds have a living stillness that is so particular. Individually, they embody the freedom of one. In twos, they aline in synchronicity. And in a flock, they fly naturally along with the other birds.
“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” Tweet, tweet.

Ddeani
I came across these pictures of our mom the other day and I just can’t stop looking at them! I am thinking they were taken in the early 70s. What I really love the most about the photos, besides the subject herself, is that the images are almost timeless. The lighting and the quality look as if they could have been taken today. I just love them!
Song
Allen Ginsberg has been my jam ever since I can remember. This poem in particular has been taped to my bedroom wall in every place I have lived since college. It wasn’t until today that I realized I was missing it and thought I would share with you my most favorite poem.
Song
The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction
the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.
Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human–
looks out of the heart
burning with purity–
for the burden of life
is love,
but we carry the weight
wearily,
and so must rest
in the arms of love
at last,
must rest in the arms
of love.
No rest
without love,
no sleep
without dreams
of love–
be mad or chill
obsessed with angels
or machines,
the final wish
is love
–cannot be bitter,
cannot deny,
cannot withhold
if denied:
the weight is too heavy
–must give
for no return
as thought
is given
in solitude
in all the excellence
of its excess.
The warm bodies
shine together
in the darkness,
the hand moves
to the center
of the flesh,
the skin trembles
in happiness
and the soul comes
joyful to the eye–
yes, yes,
that’s what
I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.
The Power Of
The subject of vulnerability has come up in so many of my conversations with so many different people lately that I felt I should spread the word. The reason that I have been talking so much about it is because I was re-inspired by Brene Brown’s Ted Talk on the power of vulnerability. I think this talk is wonderful and deeply truthful. If you have a little time, even if you have seen it before, please take a chance to watch this video. I promise it will make you think (or feel).
It’s a New Year
Whirly Ball!
Have you ever heard of Whirly Ball? This game is crazy! You have two teams of 5 or less riding in bumper cars while scooping a wiffle ball to throw against a basketball backboard for a goal. Yes, you read that right. It is a mix of lacrosse, basketball and dodgems (as my mother likes to call them). So, yesterday we took some time with our friends and went to Whirly Ball. It was awesome. For more information on Whirly Ball, go here.
HOMES
Lake Erie is no doubt one of the very best things about Cleveland and its size always stuns people who have never been here before. I’ve mentioned my love of globes and maps before but wanted to take a moment to appreciate all five of the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior (HOMES). The water is a major part of my life here, and always has been, but I often forget its connection to these other four massive lakes. Pretty spectacular.
