Inspired & Inspiring

We’re both feeling a bit distracted over here this week.  With our attention scattered in a few different directions, we decided to each take a moment and set an intention for the days ahead.

Farrell:

Release all fears.  Embrace the generosity of others.  And relax into the moment.

Lauren:

Don’t take anything too seriously.  Have fun with whatever is.

I found these pre-1925 vintage sports photos (here) a few weeks ago and have been waiting to post them.  This first one might be my favorite; it has also been the wall paper on my laptop since just after New Year’s.  I mean, look at these guys.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Full moon. Moon beam. Moonrise. Moonlight. Moonstone. Super moon. Moon phase. Moondance.

I love the moon. I always have. There is just something about it. The mystery of it, its beauty, the fact that it is always there but forever changing shape – these are all things I love about the moon. This video, Full Moon Silhouettes, makes me love the moon even more. Here is what the videographer said about shooting this piece:

“Full Moon Silhouettes is a real time video of the moon rising over the Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. People had gathered up there this night to get the best view possible of the moon rising. I captured the video from 2.1km away on the other side of the city. It’s something that I’ve been wanting to photograph for a long time now, and a lot of planning and failed attempts had taken place. Finally, during moon rise on the 28th January 2013, everything fell into place and I got my footage.

The video is as it came off the memory card and there has been no manipulation whatsoever. Technically it was quite a challenge to get the final result.”

I’ve gotten into a fairly bad habit of bringing my laptop into bed and surfing the internet for way too long when I really should just go to sleep. However, there have been some worthwhile finds, such as this birds of paradise project video from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. You’ve got to see these birds in action and check out their beautiful and bizarre behavior.

It started as an effort to seek stillness and silence but quickly transitioned to a meeting of new, fast friends. Conversations of items lost and found, kept or returned. Connections made and contacts exchanged. “Goodnight” and “Nice to meet you” and “Get home safe” to “Here’s a cab; this one’s for you.”

Into the cab and return to stillness – interrupted – by the sight of crumpled cash on the seat. A fifty dollar bill! Then another. And one more still. Cash in hand before reality sinks in. It can’t be real. But this one’s not a dream.

Another scan and not one, not two but three more twenties. Six bills in full found one by one. Talk with the driver on what’s to be done.

Amazing sitch that made me rich. / Dear St. Anthony, please come around. Something’s lost and can’t be found.

As If It Were a Dream / 1 / 2

I read this post by the infamous Penelope Trunk a while ago and it has got me to thinking:  I think it might be better (for me) to have more goals than dreams. The fact is, dreams can come true when you turn them into practice goals for yourself.  So, this year, I have decided to set 13 goals for 2013, ’cause if its a goal, it’s 100% achievable.

My 13 goals are:

Start learning to play the piano

Sing more often

Find a job I thrive in

Strengthen my meditation practice

Go to Palm Springs

Fall back in love with cooking

Dress like a 28 year old woman

Create more

Practice compassion

Save money

Plant a garden

Spend quality time with my very best friends

Trust in myself

I had dinner last night with one of my best friends who comes to NYC a lot for work.  Lucky me!  A few years ago she mentioned to me that when she has dinner plans with people, she spends a few minutes before she gets there coming up with a few conversation topics for the table, or specific questions she wants to ask her fellow diner(s).  It struck me as such a simple but super thoughtful thing to do.  What better way to make sure you’re really making the most of the time you have with the people you’re with?

So, we are headed to California soon. In a way, I am nervous and at the same time I cannot wait for the sunshine state to embrace me.

These are the things I am most excited about:

I loved reading Farrell’s Noteworthy posts (1/2/3/4/5) when she was on her trip so I thought I’d start a little spin off series of my own.

~ People are damn inspiring.

~ Making your own food and being creative are similar in that they both require the allocation of time.

~ Sometimes there’s no choice other than to work with and accept a haircut you hate.

~ There’s nothing like finding a new song/album you like enough to play on repeat for days.

~ Incorporating a green juice or smoothie into the day makes me feel good + proud of myself.

~ If you don’t know what to say, there’s always Conversation Tips from Our Grandma to fall back on.
