This troll shrine was at the florists and I had to document it.

Today we are bringing back our One Word, Two Ways series courtesy of sister’s Katy Wright-Mead and Sarah Mead. Over the years we have received a lot of comments from friends and readers who say they would like to do a post with their own sister. We have always loved that idea!  So without further adieu, thank you to Katy and Sarah for today’s post!!

DIRECTION

From Katy to Sarah:

As you know, I like giving direction. Remember when we were little and I used to make us put on plays for the family? I would decide which nursery rhyme we would act out and who played what. You were the youngest and would play the baby goat or a star in the sky or something that required the least amount of lines and the most amount of cute. Was it fun for you, by the way? I don’t think I ever asked that. I was a passionate little director and then became more of a follower later in life. Maybe those tough teenage years beat the leader out of me. If only Tina Fey had written Bossy Pants a decade earlier, am I right? Anyway, as you also know, I started directing recently, and it feels really scary (as you can see on my face in the pictures!) but really, really right. I love taking the story that’s playing in my mind and articulating those pictures and feelings to actors and designers in my specific and truthful way, so that they see it and feel it too and become inspired to re-articulate it in their own specific and truthful way. It’s a game of trust and respect and it makes me feel like a kid again and also more grown up than ever.

I loved all your plays when I was young and being a part of them was the best! I think you have such great direction.

F:  What did you think of the channeling circle we went to on Tuesday?

L:  Overall I liked it. When it first started I felt a little freaked out, then a bit difficult to take seriously. But as the night went on, I thought the medium communicated/said a lot of interesting stuff.

F:  What do you like the most about being in California?

L:  It’s a real toss up between being close to you guys and the weather. Let’s just say it’s a good combination.

F:  How are you feeling about the soft launch of The Disco Emporium?

L:  Great! There’s a lot more I want to do with it but I’m having taking it one step at a time and having fun.

F:  Is there anywhere else you would like to explore in the Southern California region?

L:  I want to spend more time traveling the coastline.

F:  How is your “to-do list” method working out?

L:  I tend to write a lot of lists and rarely refer back to them so recently I started a draft email to-do list that I’m working off of (or correctly, off which I am working). I’m finding the method pretty good but not earth-shattering. I think I need to do a better job of determining what my priorities are each day and sticking to them. Otherwise I find my attention wandering from thing to thing and thing, and the whole day just passes by. It’s a work in progress.

This week I opened an Etsy shop, The Disco Emporium, for the vintage clothes I’ve been thrifting out here in Los Angeles and I’m really excited to share it with you today!  Thumbnail photos of all available items are up on our shop page and I will continue to update that space as new additions are added to Etsy.

Below are a few styling inspiration photos for three of the available items.  I will be sharing more along these lines on Instagram @thediscoemporium.  I hope you’ll follow along!

On my way back from Mexico City, I stopped off in Texas for a quick road trip to Marfa.  “In 1971, minimalist artist Donald Judd moved to Marfa from New York City. After renting summer houses for a couple of years, he bought two large hangars and some smaller buildings and began to permanently install his art. While this started with his building in New York, the buildings in Marfa allowed him to install his works on a larger scale. In 1976, he bought the first of two ranches that would become his primary places of residence, continuing a long love affair with the desert landscape surrounding Marfa. Later, with assistance from the Dia Art Foundation in New York, Judd acquired decommissioned Fort D.A. Russell, and began transforming the fort’s buildings into art spaces in 1979. Judd’s vision was to house large collections of individual artists’ work on permanent display, as a sort of anti-museum. Judd believed the prevailing model of a museum, where art is shown for short periods of time, does not allow the viewer an understanding of the artist or their work as they intended.  Since Judd’s death in 1994, two foundations have worked to maintain his legacy: the Chinati Foundation and Judd Foundation.” (via Marfa, Texas wikipedia).

We spent two days in Marfa and saw Judd’s residence and studio, and did the full day Chinati Foundation tour as well.  Photography wasn’t allowed in any of these places so I can’t show you what I saw but you’ll have to take my word for it that the whole place is phenomenal.  In addition to the art and design we saw, Judd’s library was amazing.  It contains 13k books on pretty much every topic you’d ever want.  You can see for yourself with this browser which allows you to roll your cursor over the shelves and view his books.  Check it out!

My friend and I stayed in a safari tent at El Cosmico, which also offers tepees, airstreams and a yurt!  While we did have electric blankets, our camping experience definitely added a level of adventure to our trip.

Our visit to Prada Marfa, a permanent art project modeled after a Prada store, was made all the more interesting by having arrived about fifteen minutes after this restoration began on the site’s signage and awnings.  It usually looks like this:

NPR has done a couple of really good short segments about Marfa which are well worth a listen, if you’d like to hear more about the city and its art scene (here, here and here).  You can also visit Donald Judd’s NYC residence and studio at 101 Spring Street if you’re in New York; I haven’t been but will certainly be making a visit the next time I’m there.

March is upon us!  We hope you had a good weekend and are ready to kick off the best month you’ve had in 2015 yet.  Here are a few shots from this past weekend.

F:  What does your horoscope say for today and do you think it rings true?

L:  It says, “If you think you have to prove that you have something valuable to offer, Scorpio, consider this carefully. You’re naturally friendly and can get along with almost anyone. This may already be your strength. You have something great to bring to a crowd. Consider being yourself and not trying so hard to feel a part of things. Look at your qualities and you will prove your worth to yourself.”  This does feel particularly poignant to me today so thank you, Horoscope.com.

F:  What was your favorite part about being in Mexico?

L:  The national sites in Mexico City were so grand and awe-inspiring that they made feel very curious to know more about history, architecture and a variety of other topics.  The sense of curiosity was invigorating.

F:  Do you think that we will look back on 2015 as being one of the best years of our lives?

L: Ha!  I have never thought about that.  Sure; let’s do it.

F:  What is your favorite meal that Albert has made for us?

L: I’m really into the spaghetti with meat sauce that he makes.  Simple and delicious!

F:  Who is your favorite character on the show “Parenthood?”

L:  As you might have gathered, we’re pretty deep into this series.  I don’t know whether calling it a guilty pleasure is quite right but it’s close.  Anyway, I think Julia might be my favorite character.  She’s responsible and driven but can still be light-hearted and fun.  Let’s just say she doesn’t sweat the small stuff.
