My mom made sure to remind me that when I move into my new place, I needed to “sage” my apartment. Like the good daughter that I am, I did just that. It might seem crazy, but many cultures practice the burning of sage and other plants in order to purify a space. I have done it with all of my apartments and living spaces and will continue to pass it on to my children. Try it out!

I recently did some repainting in my apartment and am thinking about doing a little more (none of it in sage but that’s beside the point). I can’t quite decide if picking just the perfect shade of a color is an art to master or simply a stroke of luck to strike. I’ve had a lot of ‘not quite’ color results in my day. But having just spent the prior several hours or evenings hoping a color would warm on me with one more coat or in the daylight or with the furniture back in the room, I’ve lived with the unsatisfactory results for months to years on end. I’ve also had the much rarer experience of feeling like a color turned out exactly as I envisioned it. It’s great.

I really hope this is a skill that I can hone but I’m still not quite convinced.

album-figure-8

I was walking through my new Silver Lake neighborhood in LA, when I stumbled upon the wall that Elliott Smith stood against in his Figure 8 album. It was shocking. I used to love that album deeply and tenderly. I listened to it so much that I feel like it is part of my DNA code somewhere.

I remember when I was in college and found out that he was dead. It was devastating. It felt as if a whole piece of my identity was gone forever. As soon as I got home from my walk, I listened to the whole thing again. It sounds different to me for some reason – maybe a bit happier or maybe that is just me. I suggest you get down on this amazingness.

“I liked the idea of a self-contained, endless pursuit of perfection. But I have a problem with perfection. I don’t think perfection is very artful. But there’s something I liked about the image of a skater going in this endless twisted circle that doesn’t have any real endpoint. So the object is not to stop or arrive anywhere; it’s just to make this thing as beautiful as they can.” -Elliott Smith on Figure 8

This MIGHT seem random, but lately I have really been valuing my friends. In the past year, everyone in my life has given something without anything in return. I feel endless gratitude for all the support and people in my life. I can’t wait to return the favor. It is going to be great!

Thank you!

We have been staying with our friend in Santa Monica for the past 10 days. Now, we are moving over to the Eastside of LA in Silver Lake. This whole city is new and exciting for us. So far, I am loving the weather/sunshine and being around some old and new friends.

Can’t wait to see where all of this leads…

In the mean time, I just watched this movie which left a lasting impression.

If you are in Austin for SXSW, check out the Monster Rally shows.

I think this is hilarious!

I saw this artist on the Colbert Report and I am still not sure how I feel about consumer art. What about you?

I read this story in the New York Times about a writer who lost his mother and all that happened in-between.

Happy Friday!

We are starting a new series where Lauren and I ask each other questions from across the country. It isn’t always easy for us to connect now with the time change, so we thought this would be a great idea. I am up first!

1.  What’s the thing you’ve noticed most being in L.A.?

How important it is to me that the sun is shining on my face and I miss my sister.

2.  Do you think you’re going to paint the walls in your new apartment?

I like things to feel really clean and white with hints of warmth. If that vibe is achievable by keeping the walls white, then I will keep them as they are. If not, a light blue always does the trick.

3.  What’s the last book you read/podcast you listened to/movie you watched?

I am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I have only read about 40 pages, but I love it. I have always loved her as Sugar. She is a very direct, honest and brave writer. I would recommend it and I am not even done with it!

The last podcast I listened to was the Gorilla vs. Bear podcast and I loved the M.I.A. song.

The last movie I watched was Night Shift and it was ridiculous.

4.  Remember how much you missed your shoes when you were traveling?  Have you gotten any new ones?

I DO have a new pair of shoes and let me tell you, they are a rockin’.

It was well worth the wait!

5.  What’s the best thing that happened for you today?

Honestly, it sounds cheesy but doing the second day of my meditation for the Deepak and Oprah 21 Day Meditation challenge. It was a great break and I liked the centering phrase “Balance is my true nature” because I am all about balance.

If you want to sign up for the 21 Days of Meditation, you still can here!

The first two weeks of March are filled with birthdays of so many people we love. We thought for this week’s picturesque, we would honor our friends’ birthdays by posting some of their pics. Happy birthday, guys! We love each of you!

I just found out that tonight is the night we change our clocks and gain another hour of daylight!  I’m springing forward with a focus on intention this season.  I think it’s going to be a good one.

I found this on Pinterest the other day and it is kind of a good reminder.  Sometimes when you are stuck in a rut, it is not that easy to get out of it. I have done each of the things on this list knowing that they are keeping me stuck. Anyways, just some thoughts on a Saturday in March.

After a week of road tripping and highs and lows I definitely have some more notes to add to my noteworthy posts.

– Never expect the worst

– If you approach people with openness and kindness, it is kind of hard for them not to return the favor.

– The Western part of the country starting from Denver on is fantastic.

– If you break down, don’t breakdown 😉

– I am lucky to have so much support in my life.
