Personal & Interior Style

I recently watched the documentary “Eames: The Architect and The Painter” about the husband and wife design team, Charles and Ray Eames.  It is a fun, touching and inspiring film about how the Eames’ paired up to form a life of creativity and innovation through constantly evolving design.  One of the scenes featured the playful Eames’ animal masks…

…which reminded me of this wild bunch in my own life!

As well as this masked-Picasso photo, which I came upon awhile back.

And then these two works that I absolutely adore.

It all started with my obsession with Battlestar Galactica.  I was apprehensive about the show at first, until I realized it was awesome and I would kiss it on the mouth if I could.  For further understanding, please watch this Portlandia skit and you will have a glimpse of what my month of December was like. Because Battlestar proved me to be wrong about what kind stories I like to watch, I approached Game Of Thrones with a more open mind and I am glad I did.

Yeah, yeah the story is sexy, confusing and violent, but more importantly, the fashion is freaking amazing! Let us please start with the hair. Oh, the hair!

And let’s follow that up with some of my favorite looks:

I just love me some Game of Thrones! Check it out Sundays on HBO.

There was a time in my life, let’s call it the late nineties, when I always had a deck of cards in my purse.  They got a particular amount of play (wha!) on summer evenings, hanging out with friends. Euchre was the game and we all knew how to play.

I like the idea of hosting an old-fashioned card party a la Etheline Tenenbaum or Betty Draper.  My ideal scenario would be to string some lights in my fantasy backyard patio (add outdoor space to my manifestation list!), pull out the card table, mix up a pitcher of Pimm’s Cup and play a few rounds with music wafting through the windows.  Doesn’t that just sound lovely!  Who’s in?

Though I have never been, I LOVE Coachella.  Nothing is more appealing to me than seeing what everyone wears to that music festival.  For some reason the concert/bohemian/summer fashion inspires me. I like to see the way certain celebrities choose to present themselves as a “concert-goer.”  I also love to see what trends are happening at the festival. This year seems to be filled with dip-dyed hair, thick cat eye sunnies and as always, short shorts!

Here are some of my favorite looks* so far from this year’s Coachella:

My favorite spot to check out Coachella pictures is on the Cobrasnake.   Cobrasnake’s party photos capture events as an insider, rather than showing a journalistic approach.

Readers, are you aware that next Thursday is Poem in Your Pocket Day in NYC?!  A wonderful tribute to the art of poetry no doubt, but let us not neglect the pocket itself in this fine celebration.

In its sartorial role, the pocket has the power to carry an air, while its utilitarian purpose frees our hands, generously holding our stuff.

And how much does it brighten our day to find a forgotten dollar or two in there?  Who of us (discount shoppers, you know who you are) hasn’t found ourself sorely disappointed to learn that no, a garment’s pockets are not simply sown shut; they are in fact simply an illusion.  A sad, disappointing illusion in which functionality has been traded for savings.

These little compartments hold space for our style and for our belongings.  For some next week, they may hold words that speak to the one who put them there.  All little reminders of who we are.

As I have mentioned before, I love organization and while I was looking for some ideas for my accessories, I came across so many fun DIY tips and projects. I wanted to share some of my favorites with you.

I am pretty obsessed with sunglasses and have way too many of them. It is such a great idea to hang them on a string so you can see your options.

At the house I grew up in, we have so many board games with missing pieces. These coasters are a great use for old Scrabble pieces.

I have some empty tea cans that I don’t want to throw away and now I know what to do with them!

Having a hanging garden for your apartment is a great alternative if you don’t have a fire escape or backyard.

I have so many bracelets and have never had a good method of organization for them. I am going to try this for sure.

A mentor/teacher/doctor of mine recently told me that in order to be fully happy, I cannot “want” anything.  So, let’s just call this a list of things that I think are awesome.

This whole nail art thing keeps going and going. Just when you think you have seen it all, you haven’t. This website gives you tutorials on how to achieve the fun looks below. They make it look effortless, yet I can assure you, it takes some skillz.

I have been wearing hot pink lipstick lately and I intend to keep it up. It is so fun!

This picture does not do these amazing neon pants justice. You know when you try on an item and you NEVER forget it? That is what these pants are to me; I can’t stop thinking about them. You can buy these and other amazing printed jeans at Anthropolgie.

Yeah, this woman might look like a bug, but I love the color blocking trend. I have started to mix and match all the bold colors in my closet. It makes getting ready surprisingly easier!

Since I first saw this phenomenal video, I have been listening to Santigold’s Unstoppable over and over. What this dancing guy does is, well, awesome. It almost brought tears to my eyes!

LBH (let’s be honest), some days are simply better than others.  It’s just how it goes.  So from the fake-it-til-you-make-it school of thought, I thought I’d share my three step solution for coping with the inevitable.

1.  Headphones to blast anything your little heart desires.

2.  Stylin’ shades to hide behind.

3.  And a swipe of lipstick as you walk out the door.

I can’t promise your problems will disappear but you’re likely to look and feel better while making your way through them.   Godspeed to you.

For the bulk of 2011, I stewed in the idea of starting an online store.  It’s a project I’ve since put on the back burner (pun, yay!) but I just came across the photos I took while I was working on it.

I’ve never been much of a photographer but I was attracted to the prospect of honing my skills as part of the process.  I’d recently gotten a little digital camera, so that was a start.  On a flight somewhere, while flipping through the Sky Mall catalogue, I came across a Tabletop Photo Studio and thought to myself, “well, perfect, I definitely need this!”  And then I did what I imagined no person every really did with an item seen in Sky Mall magazine: I actually ordered it.

I soon found myself fully equipped with an extremely modest product inventory, a teeny digital camera, and a miniature tabletop photo studio, which as it turned out took up much more space in my little NYC apartment than the catalogue picture ever let on.

I spent many hours playing with the product positions, testing out the lighting and trying to make some sense of the various settings on my camera.  Though I was enjoying myself, all in all, I thought the photos I was producing were complete crap.

I started doubting whether there was any point in continuing to work to realize the overall concept.  It started to feel like maybe this wasn’t meant to be my thing.  And slowly the stuff I’d purchased to play around with was making me feel claustrophobic in my own home.

So I began to pack away the products, and to figure out once-and-for-all how in the heck that inflatable photo studio fits back into its space-saving case.  When Christmas came around this year, before heading out to shop, I went back to the merchandise and began to parse items give as gifts.

And though, as of now, the whole concept was just a fling, I quite enjoy looking at these pictures.  The tagline for the store was to include the notion that “everything has a lifespan.”  Now the same concept applicable to the project itself.
