Pictures

I received the opportunity to go to Chennai, India for 2 weeks and stay at an ashram.  At first, I was apprehensive to agree to go.  I know, I know.  You must think I am crazy to think twice about a trip to India.  But I had been to India 10 years ago and my opinion of it was chaos at its worst.  So when this time came around, I was determined to experience India in a different way the second time and man, am I glad I went.

Because cows are considered sacred in India, they are everywhere. Roaming the streets and eating what ever is on the ground. They are frequently walking next to you on the road.

There are hundreds of tropical flowers. I think it is funny that the only picture I took of a flower is at dusk and does not, in the least, capture the amount of its vibrance. But this flower, there is something very special about it, isn’t there?

There was a wonderful looking group of women from a place in Northern India visiting the ashram while I was there.  They told me that they all wear the same colors scarves there.  Another Indian woman overheard my conversation with them and told me that wasn’t true. So, I am not sure what the truth is! They were radiant either way.

Dusk was such a wonderful part of my days during the trip. It was a time to transition from the hot days to the cooler nights. It was my favorite time. Usually, the sun would just fade and the nighttime come.  But on one night in particular, there was the most glorious sunset.

The ashram provided us with 3 meals a day. Every day the food was wonderful. Each meal was mostly dal and rice, however, this meal is breakfast. Those white circles are idly: almost like cream of wheat pancakes. Delish!

We took a 35 minute rickshaw ride (I swear it was the reason for my sickness) into downtown Chennai to go shopping. We shopped for saris, wonderful gold jewelry, henna and kurtis.

The sari stores consist mainly of floor after floor of fabrics. It is hard to wrap your head around. All Indian women pick two patterns to create a full sari. Usually, the fabric is 9 yards long and is wrapped or draped around the body.

This picture shows the massive amount of fabric that you can choose from. It is really overwhelming.

The fruit was extremely refreshing.  We generally bought oranges, bananas and these cute little miniature cantaloupes. One day we bought coconuts to drink from.

At a quarter to 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. a bell rings in the ashram to alert you that there will be a meditation in 15 minutes. This is a picture I took before the 9:00 a.m. sitting in front of the meditation hall.

I saw this sign and laughed hysterically. It is so funny. I could not tell if it was a joke or serious. I found out later in my stay at the ashram that it is where you go to register your marriage after your wedding.

Stay tuned for part 2!

Last week I said goodbye to my life as a Blackberry customer and moved into the world of the iPhone.  In the transition, I pulled these photos from my old phone.  Have a great start to the week, everybody!

I went to my friend’s apartment the other day and this skateboard was on the wall. I could not stop looking at it. I think it is hilarious!

Wedding cupcakes that I made 😉

Catherine – Brooklyn, New York

Welcome to Williamsburg (Brooklyn) everyone!

Lauren – New York, New York

Our little brother had the idea of ‘Danson’ shoes’ (i.e. Ted Danson’s face on the soles of tennis shoes). It’s something we’ve cracked up about for a long time so finding this picture was made all the more funny to me.

Every week we ask our friends to send us a picture that they took. Here are this weeks photos:

Farrell – Brooklyn, New York

I saw this while I was shopping on Friday. It used to be just a chained up bicycle, but now it has turned into an ever evolving piece of art. I walked past it again yesterday and the sign was gone and replaced with a picture of Martin Luther King Jr.

Natalie – Cleveland, Ohio

Suburbial bliss

Paul – Plays del Rey, Los Angeles, California

So, this tandem beauty is the brainchild of my roommate ryan. Both people peddle forward but it is rigged so the person in the back is faced backwards, creating the illusion that the two people are working against eachother. Amazing!!

Albert – Brooklyn, New York

Check out this awesome new Australian coffee shop called “Toby’s Estate”, in Williamsburg (Brooklyn). Coffee is the new alcohol.

Julie – Boston, Massachusetts

This was Monday at The Museum of Science in Boston. It’s me in front of many gecko eyes.

Happy Super Monday everyone! This week we asked our friends to send us pictures specifically from their Super Bowl Sunday.  Thanks, guys!

Teddy – Naples, Florida

Saying goodbye to our awesome vacation resort.

Alan – Cleveland, Ohio

I have been cutting my own hair since I was 13; that is why I always look SO good.

Reyne – South Hampton, New York

Here is the cake I made for the Super Bowl. FYI: I am an Eagles fan.

David – San Francisco, California

We are at our friend’s house pigging out on food made by newly married women who are focused on being domestic. We bet on the total score for both teams at half time and the end of the game. We each bet two dollars. The winner at half time gets half the pot and the winner at the end gets the rest. A couple who is here, Mike and Farrell, are Giants fans so we are rooting for the Giants. Otherwise, people in San Francisco don’t really care because the 49ers lost two weeks ago and didn’t make the Super Bowl.

Lauren – Erie, Colorado

Baby Super Bowl Sunday dance party!

Jessica – Brooklyn, NY

This cup is SOOOOOOO CUTE!

Becky – Columbus, Ohio

The only pic I managed to snap was of one of the dishes I made, bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeño thingies.

Jo – Brooklyn, New York

Tonight we were bowling and super bowling. There were neon lights, chicken wings, buckets full of beer…It felt like we were in a fancy patriotic discotheque. Heaven.

Julie – Erie, Colorado

The dogs looked like a scene from Clue.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! Every week we ask some friends to send us a picture of their weekend and tell us a little bit about that picture. Here are this weeks photos:

Erin – Brooklyn, New York

An amazing subway reflection of our fun and amazing friend Erin! Hi Erin!

A Cherry Blossom Bonsai

My sister is an earthy being.
She is a cherry blossom bonsai.
I am her wind, gusts of quick-
wit, thought  & quirk.
Her roots are solid. They keep
me grounded and present.
I lift her to other worlds where
we are free to roam, body-less.
In the distance two birds
soar: Our parents. Our
Spirit guides.

Nick – Cleveland, Ohio

The silhouetted figure with the hat on the second deck reminds me that since I took this photo I’ve taken to wearing a similar type hat.  In fact, I kinda wish that had been me up there, having the time to stare downriver, the Goodtime river cruise skirting around those Cuyahogan bends, with the pre-rain chill of that September night.  Alas, I was running around performing the Rock and Roll equivalent of herding cats instead.  But I still remember taking a moment before snapping this, to stare up at the passing Detroit-Superior Bridge, the object which literally adorns the front yard of my building, and realizing what a novel moment in life it was to be on a boat, with all my friends, cruising in, out, and around the city I love, passing within a stone’s throw of the bed in which I lay my head, with all of it sound-tracked by my favorite bands in town.  And as I ran back to the stage, the only thoughts in my head were:  Do what you love, and the rest will follow.

Julie – Boulder, Colorado

This is a sunrise outside of my house this morning. I was taking the dogs out before yoga and did a double take – it was still so quiet and I could hear my mom’s voice saying ‘pink sky at night, sailor’s delight – pink sky in the morning, sailor’s warning.”

Happy Monday! This weekend brought some snow here to New York City; it was the first snow this winter (though we had some fall snow on Halloween). As you know, every week, we ask some of our friends to send us a picture they took. This week’s pictures are especially great. Thank you to everyone who contributed! Have a great week.

Mike – Georgia

I am sending these two pictures, taken where I currently am in Georgia, courtesy of Jalle Torbjorusson.

These houses are in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital and largest city.

This church is located in Mtskhreta, one of Georgia’s the oldest cities.

Farrell – Brooklyn, New York

I had a make your own pizza party and it was amazing! We made about 14 pizzas total. Each one was unique, beautiful and delicious! (This photo was taken by the wonderful and lovely Jessica Cox)

Geoff – Brooklyn, New York

Jo is a fly girl, in every sense of the word.  This lady can mooove.  Explosions of awesome dance moves. Makes you just wanna stand back and watch!

Nicholas Girard – Long Beach, California

This picture was taken when I was on a trip with my friend Mike to southern California in 2010. One of our main goals was to surf. We stayed with the right people to ensure that surfing would be a focal point of our time in Long Beach, but mother nature had a completely different schedule in mind.

This snapshot was taken on our first day.  We basically got off the plane, met up with the people we were staying with and went straight to the beach to get a look at the waves, only to find the weather overcast and a chance of rain reported for everyday we were to be in town. While on the pier and checking out the waves, Mike and I were already making bets on who would be the first person to catch a wave or to stand up on the board, for we both had not surfed before. We had quickly built surfing up to a “Top Priority” task that would only be supplemented by the spray of the ocean’s saltwater underneath our surfboards, gliding into the shore, crowds of people cheering for two guys from the Midwest.  Or at least that is how we pictured it.

Looking out into the ocean, I stood on the other side of the railing at the Belmont Pier and took this picture; it’s pointed westward out over the Pacific. I like the sense of solitude that the picture depicts and how if you look along the horizon, miles and miles away, you can see the ocean gleaming with sun and a clearer sky. That was the weather I was hoping for, but actually, for the four days I was in town, it rained for the better portion of each day. An unbelievable time was still had.  I wasn’t going to let not being able to surf ruin my time traveling.
Since this trip, Mike and I have vowed to take another trip solely dependent on surfing.

Hi everyone! I hope you had a fun weekend. It was freezing here in NYC! We asked some of our friends to send us a picture they took over the weekend and here is what they sent:

Juani – Cleveland, Ohio

I found these candles in a junk drawer of my house when I moved in. Because they’re in the shape of flowers, the only feasible way to burn them is floating in shallow water. So this was on the coffee table during a TGIF power hour at the end of a particularly stressful week and we just played with the melting wax and talked and unwound. I took this picture of the final product the next morning.

Jessica – Brooklyn, New York

I liked this nail pattern for two reasons. 1) Because it reminds me of the floor of the ballet studio that I practiced at for 11 years. And 2) because the boys I nanny for love chess and its reminds me of them.

Teddy – Columbus, Ohio

At the Columbus Beerfest this Saturday.

Albert – New York, New York

This is my go-to lunch spot around work. It was shut down over night by the health department. GROSS!

I love walking over the Williamsburg Bridge. To give you an idea of where it is, the Williamsburg Bridge connects Manhattan’s Lower East Side to Williamsburg, Brooklyn (and is the bridge that directly connects Lauren and me). New York City has tons of bridges, yet this bridge in particular is popping with graffiti and street art. The walkway is bursting with colors!  Every time I walk it, I feel inspired and grateful to be living here.

This weekend, I decided to take a walk and capture some of its inspiration. Here are some of my favorites:

I have always liked graffiti, but on my walk over the bridge I realized that most street artists take the time to write positive and uplifting messages about love and our human connection. Isn’t that nice?

Hi! Every week we ask some of our friends to send us a photo from the weekend.  Below is this week’s batch.  Thanks for your contributions, friends.

Elliot – Chicago, Illinois

My roommates and I recycled old liquor bottles, a mason jar, and a lightbulb to make terrariums. In these cold months, especially in Chicago, when everything is frozen and depressing it’s nice to have some green around the apartment.

Albert – New York, New York

Shakshouka! Have you ever heard of it?!  A friend hosted us for a dinner party on Friday night and this is what she made.  It was delish. I think it is sort of like an Isreali chili (though, no one else there agreed). Shakshouka is eaten with pita, hummus and friends!

Mary – Finisterre, Spain

A pilgrim arriving in Finisterre.

Anne – Arlington, Virginia

Grading papers on Sunday. My newcomer 7th and 8th grade ESOL students wrote original fiction stories after we recently completed our fiction unit – they’re fantastic!

Elliot – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Got into a drunken fight with the sidewalk. The sidewalk won.
